ok guys take a close look here. the picture (see above) shows actual size the outside width of the ipad is virtually the same but notice that you dont have an 1" border all the way around. therefore screen is bigger.
EDIT - so after i wrote the above in red and underlined comments I went to the Apple store. there they have pics of the iPADS in comparison and the pics are different then what I found on the net. I know there is alot of misinformation on the net. this is a prime example I guess. I had to second guess myself as I didnt actually see a ipadIII in person. looks like your indeed correct that screen size is the same. thanks for pointing that out.

the PLX device with the Dashcommand software (or similar software) going to a smartphone or ipad gives you realtime information on a large screen. aside form basic readoutos as rpms or speed it gives much more details like AIT, AFR, O2 reading, Coolant temps, vacuum reading, boost, engine temp and more. It also offers trip setting. fuel readings, fuel trims and so on. This is provided your vehicle is new enough to offer these readouts live.
as for the superchips powerpaq - yes your right I cant view alot more engine info on guages, thats fine. but some of that detail is not that useful to me other than trans temp. when you say the powerpaq reprograms the pcm, read/clear codes and thats it, I think what do you mean thats it. it does far more then just put in a tune. it has must have features for offroad that is important to a jeep rubicon offroad enthusiast. It can program Idle up for winching. also operate lockers and electronic swaybar disconnect , and turn off traction control completely in 2wd and 4wd drive hi (stock jeep does it in low only). as well I can turn on the cooling fan to run continuous which important since the JK can overheat on the trail in stock trim. when bigger tires and regearing are put on powerpaq can program for that so the ecm can recognize that which helps not only for the speedo to be accurate but also the ABS and Traction control/antiroll mitigation will work better. I believe there are other features but what i have discussed are the features that are important to me. and it seems that I can do all that through an iPAD. I think it definitely could if someone would make it.

now having said that I would like to see the trans and engine temp on a guage. that meant Aeroforce guages and to do all the programming with powerpaq. I had hoped the Ipad with OBDII reader software would be the answer to have it all in one with GPS. buying all three is quite an exense. $400 for Aeroforce guages (2 piggy back), Ipad and GPS plus software $600, and the powerpaq $400, total $1400. Now superchips just came out with Trail Dash.

it has it all, plus inclinometer, except GPS for $650. small savings but better packaged and less stuff. so I wont be going the iPAD for OBDII i dont think. GPS definitely.

Now for GPS what have you used for Topographic mapping on the iPOD?

$10 for torque and $24 for the accompany dongle.
You might want to consider a Droid....

It does all you said plus hundreds of other things.
Buy a lenovo thinkpad.

@asphalt assault

Yeah, you have gone way overboard for obd

The iPad is gps tracking and logging first, obd second. It does suck that there is no tranny temp but I will be fixing that with some autometer full sweeps on the A pillar, i dont see no reason to spend that much on guages from aeroforce. I was running a tough book for a while but a laptop just seemed too cumbersome. The 10" screen the iPad has and placed in the same spot as theksmith has his screen is just perfect for both of us.

As for the gps software I am trying topomaps and gaiaGPS. I actually am still on the loaner iPad so I have not had a chance to get the bad elf gps unit. I should have my own iPad and gps in a few weeks.

For us the iPad is turning out to be exactly what we need. Your results may very.
