3 day weekend = road trip!
Slideshow of all pictures here: http://s687.photobucket.com/albums/v...view=slideshow We loaded up the car this past weekend and took off. Friday night we drove from Phoenix to Kayenta. Saturday, we drove through Moab and ended up in Grand Junction, CO. There, we visited the Colorado National Monument. Sunday, we got up to very thick fog and headed back to Moab. Our original plan was to do some hiking at Arches NP, but with the temperatures in the low 30's, we opted for some sight seeing instead. After doing a little shopping in Moab, we drove out to the Needles Overlook 45 miles south and west. Gorgeous views. Monday consisted of the drive home where we passed through the snow covered Monument Valley. Passing through Flagstaff just before dark Friday night. Humphrey's Peak. ![]() Road into Blanding/Monticello approx. 60-70 miles south of Moab. View of Abajo Mountains. ![]() One of 3 tunnels in the Colorado National Monument just west of Grand Junction, CO. ![]() Road conditions were great the whole way. This is one of the only snowy/icy patches we had to cross the whole weekend. ![]() Monument Canyon in Colorado National Monument. ![]() Defrosting the windows on Sunday morning. ![]() On the road. great pictures Virgil. I drive Phx to GJ often; the road conditions have improved drastically since late January! your photos reminded me of last time I ran it in late january during that huge storm. I took a 180 mile detour home from Mexican hat on the 191 south since the i-17 south of flagstaff to exit 279/sedona was closed. I found out the hard way 1-40 west of Winslow was closed too as well as state route 87 west of lake roosevelt/188. all due to snow/ice conditions. ended up driving through Globe/Miami on the 60 before making it home.
attached picture shot on 260 near Forest Lakes road roughly 5 minutes/2 miles behind my savior (the snow plow truck) and right behind another semi truck on chains. this picture was before the thick black dark clouds came into play. i only had moose in the car with me. too scary to take pictures as it got real dark and ugly for 15 miles of the most white knuckle driving I've ever had to manage. once descending the mogollon rim clouds seemed to lift and things got better. weather forecasters said forest lakes got 50 inches of snow in 5 hours the morning I passed through.
