Upcoming Trail Runs, Overland Trips & Other Events

Th 17th annual Dirt Gala will be at the Cinders again this year! Come spend the weekend camping with us at the O'Leary group site near Sunset Crater in your tent, trailer, or RV. Saturday we'll do a moderate trail run into the Cinders OHV area, including driving into the bowl of a (long dormant) volcano! The trail ride is optional - you could also just hang out at camp, go into Flagstaff and play tourist, or explore on your own!
 
Chock full of friends, family, games, prizes, laughter and dirt – there’s fun for everyone! So grab the whole family and join us. Don't be that person hearing about all the awesome stuff you missed for the next whole year!

Note this event is open to all (you don't need to be a club member to attend)!

Join us on a moderate rated loop up into the Sierra Anchas (to over 5,000ft elevation). We'll visit the well known Dupont Cabin and a semi-secret tiny cave while taking in the stellar views of Tonto Basin down below. Plan for a lunch stop in the shady pines (i.e. bring food and a chair)!
 
The trail is primarily easy forest roads with a few rocky washes to cross where skid plates might be needed. One long steep descent with loose rocky terrain gives this trail its moderate rating. This run  should be doable by many stock high-clearance 4x4s (Wranglers, Broncos, Tacomas, etc.)

Event details
Join me for 3 days of exploration and chillaxing on this overland style run around the Mogollon Rim area. This area has some amazing scenery, great trails, quiet camp spots, and is generally pretty awesome. I've always enjoyed hanging out up there. We'll end at Highway 87 just North of Payson mid to late morning Sunday.
 
The Trail Rating: Easy-Moderate 
Based on previous experience most of these trails are easy to maybe light moderate, nothing too technical is involved. Last time I was up that way there were a couple of tricky, not technical, spots on a couple of trails. Nothing we cannot handle. 
 
Our Route: 
The primary route is about 105 miles (give or take a few). We’ll start just north of Camp Verde and head across toward the Mogollon Rim area.
On Saturday, we’ll include a stop with a short hike down to Aspen Springs. To get there, we’ll do a quick loop from FR 96 and return to it.
 
Note:
Extra fuel isn’t strictly necessary, but it’s always a good idea—especially if you’re running a thirsty rig. You may also be able to help someone if they need it.

Friday (optional): Meet in Oracle then run most of Chiva Falls and camp out. Saturday: Meetup with main group in Oracle and start Charouleau Gap trail, camp about mid-way point of the trail. Sunday: Finish Charouleau Gap trail. Head home or if staying for Monday then we'll head over to the start of Sutherland trail to camp. Monday (optional): Remaining people run Sutherland Trail then head home.  
All 3 trails are rated difficult. This adventure is for experienced drivers with modified vehicles. 
 
General requirements (details will be added in the trip sign-up thread): 1 or more axle lockers required, 35" tires for Wrangler/Bronco/etc., 37" tires for Gladiator/Tacoma/etc. Full size rigs are NOT recommended. NO trailers allowed on this run.

We'll head out East US 60 towards Superior, and cut south on Highway 177 for a short distance. From there, we will cross desert land before heading east down/up Cottonwood Canyon.  We'll continue east, through this pretty area, a small section of shelf road, have lunch at the remnants of the old Ajax Mine. Then head east more, and finally north around Picketpost Mountain through Telegraph Canyon. We end up in Superior.
 
Difficulty:  It was a moderate trail, due to sandy washes and a shelf road, so I expect the same...but don't hold me to it!   I do not expect this to be difficult. That being said, be sure you have good off-road tires, tow points, and all that stuff.  Mini-vans are not accepted.  Have some ground clearance.
