Event details
Join my husband and I for a day trip on the famous Smiley Rock in the Jerome/Prescott area and connecting to the Allen Spring and Cooper Chief trails that bring you to Cottonwood.
Just outside of Jerome, one of the most famous and ghostly mining towns in all Arizona, sits a rock that never stops smiling. Smiley Rock is one of the more famous off-road trails in the State and for good reason. The drive is challenging, but not overly difficult and provides inspiring scenery as you travel along the south edge of the Woodchute Wilderness Area inside the cool and shaded Martin Canyon. The main attraction is the rock with a smile set in stone.
This trail will take us across the fields of Chino Valley into the Mingus Mountain range. Easy for the first portion and then a challenging rock garden. Lunch will be at the end of the Smiley rock trail. After that we we will connect to the Allen Spring and Copper Chief scenic trails over and down Mingus to end the day in Cottonwood, AZ. Allen Spring and Copper Chief are rated as moderate and appear to have a higher chance of pinstriping. However, the views of the Verde Valley look amazing. There are some excellent restaurants and wineries available in old town Cottonwood.
