i'll be following your blog for sure! please post some updates along the way here too - maybe start a thread in the Trips Reports sub-forum...

i'm eager to hear more about what led to the decision, how you solve the financial and other challenges you experience, and how (if?) you'll re-integrate back to a more typical suburban life eventually?

everyone here certainly wishes you the best and i think we're all very excited for you too!

Toyota DIY Overhead Cargo Net
This weekends project was a DIY overhead cargo netting type thing! We had seen some online for about $150-$200, can you believe that?!

Anywho, we went over to Home Depot and Joanns to look at some material options. No luck at home depot but we did get the paracord there. Joanns had a netting type of material by the yard. We got 2 yards for this since it was pretty wide at about 49 inches or so. Was around $7.99 a yard but we had a 40% off coupon! Boom!

So basically we just cut to shape/width. We opted to fold the netting onto itself for a double layer of netting.

We then proceeded to weave the paracord around the edges in a square shape, anchoring to the existing hangar mounts inside the cab.

So we weaved the paracord through to the corners and then unscrewed the Hangar caps a little to run the paracord and netting behind/around the bolt. The bolt is faily thin and long so it should hold up pretty dang well.

Next was just tightening everything really. Once it was all weaved up and mounted at the 4 corners we then ran more paracord in an X pattern to. These are wrapped around the same rear Hangar bolts and only tied onto the front backseat grab handles. We opted for this in order to cinch down loads when its full of bulky items.

Thats it! We tested it out with a number of blankets and bigger coats. Should work great and be very rigid.

nice job! i've looked at some of the commercial versions of those "attics" and indeed, they aren't cheap.

you might consider using bungee cord rope in there somewhere too, maybe along the same lines as the "X" - just to help prevent sag when there are less or different shaped items stuffed in there.

I had a hard time deciding on a roof rack for this thing. Such a wide range of pricing and what not ya know?
So i ended up deciding on the Prinsu Design 7/8ths no drill rack. I knew i didnt want to drill into the rood if I didnt have to.

Its pretty modular and uses T-slot cross rails. It bolts right into the factory mounting locations too.

Overall Im pretty happy with it. I am getting a slight harmonic vibration up around 65-80mph. Seems folks remedy this by adjusting the wind deflector height and maybe add some rubber trim around it as well.
