Default Goat Canyon Trestle Bike Trek Pictures, April 2018
Offroad Passport's recent trip to So-Cal to visit Anza Borrego State Park presented the perfect opportunity for George to check off a 10-year-old bucket list item. He'd wanted to go to the Goat Canyon Trestle near Jacumba, CA since hearing about it, and this was the perfect time.

In preparing for the trek he found out that a lot of people bike the 9 miles to the trestle and back, making it easier and faster than hiking. So he tuned up his bike and loaded it on the roof of our camper shell. We left a couple days ahead of everybody else, and stayed at the only place we could find near the Goat Canyon Trestle Trailhead. The DeAnza Springs Resort is a "clothing optional" RV & camp park nestled in the rocky landscape of the Jacumba hillsides.

We rented a trailer there, and while George was on his adventure, I planned on hanging out enjoying a visit with our daughter, who drove down from San Diego. Luckily for us, a fluke in the weather brought cold wind and rain, so we were spared from witnessing nudists out and about. George on the other hand experienced frighteningly strong winds, rain, and icy rain while he was out there.

It only took him about 5 hours to ride out there and back. He says it was pretty creepy out there, especially going through tunnels you can't see through to the other end because it curves. Riding through with just his headlamp beam made it feel as if something was going to jump out at him from the sides. Inside the abandoned rail cars, he said he halfway expected some bum to sit up out of one of the seats as he walked through. Oftentimes the bike path next to the tracks became narrow next to a cliff, and he said that, and crossing the trestles was pretty scary!

We didn't expect him back so early, so when he came rolling up to the trailer in his crazy weather-appropriate outfit while we were eating lunch, my daughter suddenly startled and said: "Mom, some weird guy is here! Oh wait, that's dad" LOL.

Look at those leaf springs!

WOW, really like the pictures George. What a cool place might have to load up the bike and go out there myself.

A friend of ours posted this video on facebook of a crew taking equipment into the gorge in Nov. 2012. At 35:00 is excellent footage of them crossing the Goat Canyon Trestle, and immediately afterward they enter and pass through the next tunnel, which was open at that time. When G was there, he had to leave his bike in that next tunnel, and climb over the rocks and landslide that blocked the opposite end from where he entered.

I remember the old days when you could take motorized vehicles back there. I remember being a kid and a passenger in my dad's FJ-40 and driving to there and spending the day poking around the area.

Fantastic pics George. Thanks for sharing. Just saw an episode of "Mysteries of the Abandoned" that featured this bridge.
