Tow Truck Re: Late to the Party: theksmith's 2016 JK Unlimited Rubicon
no-one seems to make parts to repair the smartbar, and a new one is $1,300.

...so i installed a regular non-electronic OEM front sway bar (part #52059971AC). no more "magic button", i'm one of the plebians now!

i already had Teraflex disconnects, so i just needed to make holders to keep things where they should be while wheeling. the Teraflex kit did come with posts to supposedly hold the links up while disconnected, but they position them where the tires grab them if you turn during even moderate flex.

1/16" stainless braided cable and a small stainless clasp were used to create a couple straps. i just did a ghetto-crimp on the aluminum ferrules with some vice-grips.

a little figure-8 link was bent in the middle at a right angle and then i screwed one side of that into the frame with a self-tapping 1/4" bolt.

all the parts were bought at Ace hardware and even all on the same isle except the bolts!

i learned a neat trick for cutting braided cable if you don't have the right tool. just wrap it in masking tape and then give it one good hit with a cold chisel to get a nice clean cut!

Now you're reduced to stooping to disconnect like the rest of us. I like how you've got lines on the diff cover bolts to see if they've moved.

yup, and i took for granted how nice the button was! i might purchase the manual SwayLoc system one day, but for now i have more important things to put that $800 towards.

those paint lines are from when the axle seals were replaced. Joe always marked every bolt after they did a final tightness check to make it easy to spot if something got missed - i guess Jason picked up that same good habit from him! it probably helps them know if a customer jacks around with something and then brings it back with some issue too.

I think I'm going to steal this idea. The disconnect posts on Barbie break off when I use them, not sure why. It's a PITA to drill them out again. There won't be much if any leverage on that bolt.

I had the same problem, the tire was hitting the disconnect posts. I ended up moving them up by the top of the shock tower and solved the problem.

Hog rings, hog ring pliers, and an electric knife.

Uncovering/recovering a seat cushion and adding or replacing seat foam.
