Last three photo albums. Attempted Mud run and then the return in the snow to AZ.

On the way home our fuel pump started acting up and we had a very hard time going up the hills. Then today in town I got death wobble. I think our old girl is mad after all of the wheeling!

Well, this trip turned out different from what I imagined it would be! Don't get me wrong; we had a good time in spite of the two mechanical failures, the lost camp chairs, and the turn in the weather, but boy we were not expecting that!! Here's how it went.

We left a day early and drove halfway there on Sunday with scottL, because we wanted to get to Hurricane earlier on Monday so we could get the lowdown on Sand Hollow admission and go grocery shopping. We spent the night at the Marble Canyon Lodge. The only note-worthy thing that happened at Marble Canyon was the arrival of A LOT of people getting ready to go on a 14 day river rafting adventure from there the next morning. George and I got into a conversation with one of the river guides and traded adventure stories. While these people have no role in our adventure, I will circle back around to thoughts of them at the end of my story.

We got to Hurricane Monday morning, visited the Sand Hollow Recreation admission booth and found out you don't have to pay admission if you don't use the state park facilities. There are many other entrances to Sand Mountain OHV, so entering through the state park is optional. It's optimal for people who trailer their rigs.

We got to the rooms and pretty soon everyone began to arrive, and we raised a toast to our first day of wheeling!

Day 1 West Rim Trail & (a very short section of) Double Sammy

West Rim Trail is rated 3, and goes up the western edge of Sand Mountain just as the name suggests. There are some amazing views from the trail! Here are all my pictures from the day: Diane's Day 1 Pics

Here are some faves from the day:

I love Sarah's version of Top of the World

The end of West Rim Trail takes you down the sand dunes toward the reservoir. The views from up there are amazing!! We passed by the entrance to Double Sammy, a 7 rated trail. George and theksmith wanted to run it, but everybody else went back to their rooms. Running Double Sammy was a lot of fun until it wasn't anymore. We didn't get very far in before we had a catastrophic failure on Clifford! :O

And then POP!! I thought it was a spring but then George said we lost our steering. Here is the culprit!

Kristoffer generously lent a rug for George to lay on, and between them they were able to come up with the tools needed to replace the broken pitman arm with the spare we've been carrying around for the last 10 years. Never say never, folks!

Fixed and back in operation, we cut our losses and returned the way we got there.

That's it for the first day, stay tuned for Day 2 to Toquerville Falls!

Day 2 Toquerville Falls

On Wednesday we went to the adjoining town of Toquerville to the trail head to Toquerville Falls. This was a high-use (bumpy) graded road to the water fall, with a side trip to some towers and an incredible overlook of the St. George/Hurricane area. After visiting the waterfall we crossed it, and took a trail that looped back to the main road after crossing the creek multiple times. Here is a link to all my pictures: Diane's Day 2 Pics

Here are a few

Sarah took this photo of us taking our selfie

The water was an odd color; reminded me of wet cement

Airing up

Up next, Backdoor to Babylon on Day 3.
