Labor Day Weekend at the Sunflower Mine Trail

3rd Annual Samdog3 Memorial Run

Camping will be available Saturday and Sunday nights, 4600’ elevation at start/finish line, 3900’ elevation at the camping spots along the west fork of Sycamore Creek. Please be advised and informed of potential fire bans/restrictions if you plan to camp in the area. The camping area up by the corrals offers room for any size camping unit, and plenty of room for tow-rigs and trailers.

The run will start at 8:30am on Sunday September 4th. Everyone planning to run through the Sunflower Mine trail will need to be ready to roll no later than 7:30am Sunday morning. This means please be at the airdown location and ready (tires set to pressure of your choice, and ready to start the trail). We will have a drivers meeting that everyone is required to attend, so if you will be camping down below or towards the start of the trail, you will need to be back up top at the corrals for the meeting and start.

Of course this will be a VERY large group, the past two years there have been over 50 rigs train through the trail. Last year it took a little less than 5 hours for the start of the rigs to complete the trail, but as always…be prepared for anything and/or a potentially long day. Please remember we are all adults and be courteous to your fellow wheelers, and represent yourself and our community positively with all actions, etc.

Through communication with the Forest Service we are good to go and we need to remember they are very interested in what we do and when. Keep in mind the Forest Service will be constantly updated with the progress of this run’s organization and development, day of event and completion of activities in the area. If anyone has any question or concerns please post up any and everything in this thread and we will do our best to get you answers.

If you plan to attend this run please sign up / post in this thread. I will be keeping a “confirmed” list updated at the bottom of the post. If your plans change and you do not plan to attend or will not be there please let us know ASAP. An accurate head count is required for the Forest Service and permitting. Please in your post let us know the number of vehicles and people planning to attend. In keeping with the spirit of Joe Egler… EVERYONE is welcome to attend, come one, come all and enjoy his favorite trail.

If you are not familiar with Sunflower Mine Trail, there are a few things to be aware of and plan for. This trail can cause damage and create situations for even experienced wheelers. If you are a novice don’t be discouraged or feel you are unwelcome, there will be plenty of great people to help and get you through the trail.

Please be advised that this trail can potentially slice/damage tires, cause body damage, under carriage damage, etc. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 31” tires with some lift. Street tires are not a good choice and some sort of all-terrain tire should be installed. Tow-points front and rear if you have them are a plus for that “just in case moment”. Many fellow wheelers will have a strap or winch to help free any stuck rigs.

This will be an all day event. Bring plenty of food, water, beverages, etc. for everyone in your group. Also if planning to camp bring everything you will need for dry camping.

Staging will be up the hill, just beyond the Y junction past the second cattle guard. Continue up the hill to the right at the Y to find the staging area / upper camp site by the corals.

Through the organization of RubiDing and with help from the 4x4 Ham group we will have communication support again for this years run. They will insert jeeps with Ham radios evenly throughout the pack. These jeeps will be in communications with a few fixed relay stations positioned on the high ground along the trail. The fixed relay stations will be in contact with base stations in the valley with phone and internet access.

We need one or two AZVJC members that are familiar with the AZVJC emergency call list and the procedures for using it to be on standby in case assistance is needed. If you can provide this support post up and send me your contact info via pm.

The Samdog3 Memorial run is a great event to honor and remember our friend and fellow wheeler, Mr. Joe Egler. Many of us got our first real taste of wheeling with Joe on this trail and he loved to show this trail and what wheeling was all about. In the spirit of Joe come out and meet new friends, reminisce with some old friends and enjoy Joe’s favorite trail.

Any and all questions or concerns please post up, or shoot me a PM.

Please be advised the sign up for this run must be done by Friday night September 2nd.
