09/2011: Kelly Point and Twin Point, Grand Parashant NM, AZ

Recommended Posts

This trip was part of a one week outing in the Arizona Strip in September 2011. Kelly Point und Twin Point are two very seldom visited viewpoints at the Grand Canyon North Rim. Our basecamp was at Poverty Mountain and from there we had a two day trip down to this two points.

The trail itself is not really difficult, but the last 26 miles are strenuous.

On the trail down to Kelly Point we past Waring Ranch, which is still in pretty good shape. There is also a log book to sign in.

After Waring Ranch, the real trail starts:

In the afternoon we reached Kelly Point:

We camped at Kelly Point and enjoyed the sunset the next morning:

Then we went back the same trail, we came in.

On the way back we were much faster, than on the way in, so we decided to visit Twin Point, too. From the turn off from Kelly Point trail at Oak Grove it is around 15 miles oneway.

Along the trail are a lot of interesting viepoints:

From there we went back to our base camp.

Chris, the photos are spectacular! Although I've lived in Arizona for over 30 years, I'm embarrassed to say I've never been to these beautiful places along the north rim. Someday I'll have to make a trip of it to go see them. Thanks for posting the trip report! It's very good. Diane

Hi Diane,

it´s a pleasure. But you should not wait too long, as the BLM is closing so many trails in the Arizona Strip. It´s also a big problem for the ranchers out there, today.

Chris

Sucks to hear what the BLM is doing.

That is some beautiful country! I've been to the Grand Canyon when I was younger, but that of course was all the touristy areas. I'd love to go again, but this time along the roads less traveled.

There will be again a trip next year september. It is on the east side of the Arizona Strip and will cover most likely things like Kanab Point, SoB Point, Whitmore Canyon... I am usually going with the MOE people from Kingman, AZ. If you are interested to join that trip, I can ask this guys. I am sure they are happy to have people with them.
