Red Creek May 2012 Pictures & Trip Report

Recommended Posts

I managed to get out there yesterday with a friend of mine. He only had the one day so we did not get to camp. I did run into some other folks that I knew in their MAX vehicles (similar to Argos). I knew they were going to be out there and headed for Red Creek also but did not get any details. We ran into them just before FR269. On the way to Tangle creek one of their rigs blew an engine so they had to go back. My friend in his 4x pinz and I continued on to Red Creek. There was a guy and his wife setup for some long term camping where Red Creek and the Verde met. He said he had been doing pretty well with the fishing until AZGF came shocking all the carp and catfish, then throwing them onto the shores. AZGF said they were not native and needed to be gotten rid of.

Here are some of the pics I took along the way, clearly not a photographer. (full set available here http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v721/6x6pinz/Red%20Creek%20May%202012/ )

Was the gate secured at the Mazatzal Sign ??? It would have been to the left of the sign ....

The only gate that was there was the big gate that was to the north of the sign. It blocked off access to the fenced area. There were two post almost near the top that looked like many many years ago had a fence or gate attached but there was no sign of it. There is a small road that leads south from the fenced area but it would take you clearly into the wilderness area. We did not walk up the hill to see where it went so I don't know how far it goes. We did a day trip which did not leave us much time to do alot of looking around.

If you walk passed the gate, the road will take you to the landing strip ...

The last time I was there, a Jeep driver had opened the gate and was driving to the to the runway ...

I brought to his attention that even though the gate was not secure he would be driving into a

wilderness area .. He indicated that he was meeting someone at the airstrip and drove on with

3 occupants ...

When I got back, I called Tonto Rangers and left a voice mail ... Tammy Pike called me and I

told here what occurred and she said they would secure the gate ... that's why I was asking ...

Best regards,

Mike

Did not look like the gate had been secured for some time. The trail definitely had been traveled recently but did not look like it got a lot of use. The position of the gate left only one way to turn around once you got to the top of the hill. You had to go to where the old building floor is to have room to turn around. There were signs of people up there shooting recently and sadly it looked like they had been shooting towards the river. We picked up a bunch of brass and steel cases along with most of the left over targets/bottles and cans.

There is no FAA designation nor could I find it on a VFR map .......

However, Mapsource indicates an un-named airstrip at that location ...
