For you folks with new rigs - one of the first accessories we recommend is a CB. I would suggest you get one before the class if possible.

Knowing what's going on (for example why are we all stopping again?) really is essential to your enjoyment of group runs.

You don't have to rip apart your dash or run complicated wiring to get started. Midland and Cobra both make units that plug into a cigarette lighter outlet for power and you can run a temporary magnetic mobile antenna on your roof or hood.

I've personally had good success with the Midland and seen people have mixed experiences with the Cobra. The Cobra does have an external speaker plug, so if you have an open-top/doorless rig then that may be the one you want (so you can run a more powerful speaker).

Midland 75-822 ~$80: http://www.amazon.com/Midland-75-822-Channel-CB-Way-Radio/dp/B00000K2YR

Cobra 75 WXST ~$90: http://www.amazon.com/Cobra-75WXST-40-Channel-CB-Radio/dp/B00005N5WW

A magnetic base antenna ~$30: http://www.amazon.com/Radio-K30-Magnet-Mount-Antenna/dp/B001K2GGB4

The antenna above comes with a cable, others may require a cable as a separate purchase. Also note that the Midland comes with a small "rubber ducky" antenna that attaches directly to it - however inside a vehicle it's nearly useless, you'll only hear the guy right in front of you.

Radio Shack and Fry's Electronics carry some CB stuff too, but not these small all-in-the-hand units (as far as I know). And of course any truck stop, like the Flying J out on the edge of town will have plenty of CB stuff too.

if anyone needs help, just post up!

I unfortunately am not going to be able to make it. My truck has some issues that I am not going to have sorted out in time. How often do you guys do these complete beginner courses? I really want to go to one, as I am a complete noob.

This is the first noob course we are having, there are no plans in the works for the next one. You might want to show up without your truck and try to bum a ride with someone. George:cool:

yeah, we'll probably offer an intermediate class next (not sure when), before we re-visit the beginner stuff.

Anything else we should bring?

I'm new to all this too.

AZDurango, I have a seat if you want to ride with me.

I'll have a open seat too - my passenger who I was hoping could learn from this can't make it now.

And I have an extra hand-held CB if anyone needs one.

How much do you want for it? Money is a bit tight this month, so I don't think I'm gonna be able to get a new CB just yet..

I'm not looking to sell it - I just mean I have an extra one if someone needs to burrow it for the day while we are out there. Let me know!
