kaspily 2 Posted August 28, 2012 Anyone have a good idea to easily make coffee or warm water for tea? I checked out the 12v water heaters/coffee makers on amazon and so far haven't found something that impressed. What do you do to get your shot of energy on the trail? Thanks! -kaspily
ducksface 2 Posted August 28, 2012 a12v cup heater, the kind that goes inside your cup, and a small 110V COFFEE MAKER with a 1000w inverter. Decades of research, this was the outcome. Heats soup also.
theksmith 3,833 Posted August 28, 2012 so far we like the simplicity of just boiling water in a pot on the stove. we once had this coleman hot water thing (link...). We used it for showers and it also made boiling hot water for coffee, but we decided it was just too bulky to carry and setup when we already had to setup a stove anyway. coleman also makes this drip coffee maker (link...) for use on a standard stove, but again, it's something else to carry besides a pot which you already need. then i even tried just a small tea kettle, but yet again we dumped it in favor of packing less. i still have it i think if you want it! we use the Starbucks VIA instant coffee so that we just need to add water and have nothing to cleanup. they are far superior to the other little packet coffee's that are out there (like folgers, etc). however some people don't like Starbucks, and for them i'd recommend still just doing hot water instead of a contraption plus a re-usable mesh filter like this one (link...). or if you guys both drink coffee, it would be easier to just make a large pot with a french press (link...). anyway, those have been our experiences... hope it helps. George makes cowboy coffee with just a single pot + water + grounds. you could go that way, hardly anything to clean up then.
mbuckner 134 Posted August 28, 2012 You can buy individual coffee bags to make a cup ... just boil the water and let it steep ... http://www.walmart.com/ip/Folgers-Singles-Classic-Roast-Coffee-6-oz/10318575
dzJeepChic 2,435 Posted August 29, 2012 You can buy individual coffee bags to make a cup ... just boil the water and let it steep ... http://www.walmart.com/ip/Folgers-Singles-Classic-Roast-Coffee-6-oz/10318575 I used one of these in an emergency when my coffee maker broke (while at home) and it was terrible. I wouldn't even use them for camping... In the past we've tried boiling water & using instant coffee. Depending on the brand you select, this is not an all bad route (not the best but not the worst). I don't mind Taster's Choice or the Starbucks packets theKSmith mentioned above. We've also tried using a French Press kind of like this (link...). The French Press makes good coffee, but George didn't like using it because ours only made 1 cup at a time plus it was a hassle to clean the grounds out while camping, it required too much water. Now we use an old coffee pot and George makes cowboy coffee, meaning there's no filter for the grounds involved. I don't know his exact method, but he's gotten really good at making it. The only equipment needed is a coffee pot and a camp stove.
dzJeepChic 2,435 Posted August 29, 2012 Also, theKSmith also has this super cool jet-boil thing (link to thread about it here) that he brings if it's just him sometimes. I think it would be a great thing to use if all you want is one cup of coffee and you don't cook much else because it's very small and portable. Ha, I thought about it after I answered above while I was driving to yoga class; you didn't really ask how to make coffee, you asked how to heat up water for coffee... 6x6pinz 1 Posted August 29, 2012 just go cheap and fun and build a soda can stove (or beer can stove) They work great, will heat up water for coffee or tea and won't set you back anything if you can find a used aluminum can.
ducksface 2 Posted August 29, 2012 Wind, rain, fuel, mandated restrictions, mess, complication, cold, mud. And that was just on a Wednesday! Our electric brews right in to a metal insulated 15oz cup w/lid. I'm not good with open flames. Coffee is for the spousal unit. I drink mt dew to make it even simpler.
