TheKSmith's 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ Limited 4.7 H.O. - The Do-It-All Rig

Recommended Posts

did a couple small fixes...

the steering wheel radio control buttons on the left side of the wheel started to not respond consistently. i very carefully sprayed some electrical contact cleaner/lube into it. i say carefully because the stuff i had from radioshack will bleach trim plastic, so i had to surround the area with a couple rags. the buttons are behaving well now. FYI - this contact cleaner says it's safe for plastics: http://amzn.to/1KyD4hk

next up was my wobbly mirrors. even after i greatly improved my vibration issue, i noticed that all of my mirrors still shook, though not as bad.

the rear-view mirror issue was easy to see... the 2 ball type joints on the arm were solid, but the silver disc where the arm goes into the mirror had a bunch of play. i removed the mirror (one screw and an electrical connector), but i couldn't figure out how to take it apart any further. so i just squeezed some plastic trim adhesive around the little disc. i used that instead of Goop because it's very runny so i figured it would get down into the crack better. i let it dry overnight and it did take up the slack in the attachment point.

then it was time to address the outside mirrors. they were actually the most "floppy" even over potholes and such. to get the glass off, you point the mirror all the way down, then just pry it straight up with a thick putty knife or large flat screwdriver.

all that's holding it on are 4 friction-fit plastic tabs, you can see them in the pic below as well as the connector for the auto-dim and the 2 spade connectors for the heated function.

be sure to hold down on where those spade terminals are riveted to the back of the mirror as you pull the wire off - otherwise you can rip the connections completely off the mirror heating element.

here's the back side of the glass - you can see the 4 slots that the tabs slide into:

the round disc that the mirror attaches to is then attached by 4 more tabs to the arms of the electronic tilt assembly. i noticed there was a lot of play where the arms clip onto the disc.

my first thought was to put some RTV in those tab areas to take up some of the wiggle, yet still give enough to let it pivot. i let that dry overnight, put the glass back and took it for a spin on the freeway.

the vibration and the overall "wobbliness" was improved but i could still feel a fair bit of slop when just gently pushing on the glass, so i figured there was room for improvement.

i went full ghetto fix and used a zip tie! i looped it around the tilt-disc and the electronic tilt assembly, gently pulling the disc against the assembly. i didn't crank the zip-tie all the way down (you'd lose all the adjustability), just enough to put some tension on the components to take up the free-play. i can still adjust the mirror plenty, just not as far in any direction.

this ended up working quite well, i can't wiggle the glass easily anymore and it appears much steadier on the road both in terms of vibrations and bumps.

Which one did you end up using, Airpark didn't have a Mopar bearing in stock? I would've held out for the Mopar bearing & utilize the Napa one only if i couldn't wait.

well i don't have a second car like you ;) Airpark isn't open when Aimee gets home and I wanted my junk back together!

the Napa was actually a different part i had laying around, i was just using it for an example.

i used the National i got from O'Reilly since the Autozone Timken one was busted. the local Autozone didn't have another one in stock, or who knows, the next one might have been fine.
