TheKSmith's 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ Limited 4.7 H.O. - The Do-It-All Rig

Recommended Posts

Looking great K-Dude. You should start your own YouTube channel and have a WJ show!

I have never been able to use 4-high on anything other than flats and "minimal" hills. I think I have added so much in weight, that my 4-cyl is mad at me. ;)

did your 242 t-case have the 32 spline output?? Woods told me he couldn't do a SYE kit for mine, since it was a 32 spline, and not the smaller 27 spline.. i am going to be bummed if yours is a 32 spline unit, because that is what i wanted to do.

i don't know for sure, didn't count them, but i think all of the 242 "HD" are the same... so either i'll be getting back my junk with a "sorry" note, or else he's sourced some different parts now... i'll definitely count the splines when it comes back and let you know

he mentioned to me that he already had made one prototype SYE for the 242HD but is waiting for the guy to pick it up and try it out... that one he said was a challenge because the guy wanted a custom tail cone with a speedo pickup and of course the main shaft had to be cut special to engage the pickup (because the guy wanted to run non-tone-ringed custom axles and still have speedo).... tom said that all that was the hard part and if i just wanted a simple SYE without the speedo pickup then he was confident he could do it... guess we'll find out!

got my SYE back from Tom Woods and installed it last night...

putting everything back together is basicly just the reverse of the disassembly... only one issue, getting the lock rings back on was a big pain, untill i decided to just take the Dremel with a cutting wheel and put a couple tiny grooves in the ring as shown below so the my snap ring pliers wouldn't keep slipping off:

this shows how the main shaft was necked down, re-slpined, and chamfered on the end:

here you can see how the center of the shaft was drilled and threaded:

here is the custom machined piece that takes the place of the tailcone extension and provides the seal for the new rear flange:

here is the new rear flange that the driveshaft will bolt too... i don't know if Woods used a flange instead of a yoke so that you can use a larger u-joint shaft if you want, or if this was all that he had that would work:

here's the final assembly:

everything that came back from Tom Woods was quality stuff, came back clean and with perfect tolerances, no slop in how any of the parts fit, and the flange is very heavy duty.

this should be a great new option for those of you with 242HD's, call Tom for a current price (http://www.4xshaft.com)

790 is not a bad score. Perfect is 1000. Number 7 scored in the low 800's the first few times; haven't been back on the ramp in a while. Wanted to wait until after the Currie Bushings were in to try it again.

George
