91AzXJ 2 Posted September 25, 2013 I'd take your welds any day of the week. My welds are ok, but my problem is that my helmet sucks and I end up not being able to see where I'm welding. So mine end up looking like rabbit trails. Good thing that the only one who is gonna see them is me!! LOL! Bill I have a good helmet, just that my welds suk! PMA4x4 4 Posted October 5, 2013 Picked up the rest of the hardware and metal yesterday for the slider project. Hoping to get to it this weekend. I need to get some work on the wife's daily driver first.
PMA4x4 4 Posted October 7, 2013 I took a quick break and tossed together a wire rack. I got sick of having the spools just laying around.
PMA4x4 4 Posted October 12, 2013 I got bored and decided to add a another item to my trail tools. Emergency Battery Welding Kit Requires 3 batteries wired in series to get 36 volts. All cable is high strand flexible 2ga cable 10FT positive lead 7FT grounding lead (2) 20" "jumper" cables to go between batteries (2) 5 packs of vacuum sealed 1/8" 6013 general purpose welding rod Flip up protective welding goggles. The lens has been changed to for arc welding. as usual all of the terminal ends are sealed with adhesive filled heatshrink. Ok well I think with proper battery connections and good cabling its a for sure thing that on the smaller jobs 24v (or two batteries) is all that would be needed. I would say have 3 batteries at the ready if you feel its going to be 3/16" or thicker. 3 very different batteries with very much different ages.
theksmith 3,685 Posted October 13, 2013 awesome info on what to expect from different voltages and material thickness! i was recently wondering how different voltages would do on un-prepped thinner material - like 1/8" steel that was rusty or had some paint or galvanized coating on it. i know foreign material would compromise the weld strength, but just curious if the 6013 and 36v in that situation would get you off the trail. i'm in the middle of changing a few things on my kit, more info when it's done... EDIT - also wanted to ask you if you've tried 6010 versus 6013 on DC before? i'm carrying 3/32" 6010, but i've yet to practice with it. EDIT EDIT - wait, one more question were those welds you showed push or pull?
PMA4x4 4 Posted October 13, 2013 I just went right to 6013 for all purpose rod. mainly push. I had to remember how to stick weld at the beginning of this so I think the first few are pulls.

PMA4x4 4 Posted October 13, 2013 George when you mentioned it it reminded me about building a set. I had thought about making one of these for a while. Goes back to 2009 turkey day run in florence when a guy busted his tracbar. First time I saw the battery idea in use however they were wiring them in parallel.
