Thanks for the info. Sounds like an awesome place!
Since we drove by the Cherry Creek Ranch here's their website; click on the "History" tab, it has some interesting
info with a short video ....
When did they build that lodge? I've been on that road plenty of times and don't remember it. Did they convert one of the existing ranches?
it's not on the "regular" Cherry Creek Road trail (FR203)...
just before the northern end of 203, we saw a road to the right and explored it. some of our GPS units called parts of it Cherry Creek Rd and then parts of it FR 54A. the ranch/lodge is on this trail. it comes into young from the east side.
map here of the lodge/ranch: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=cherry+creek+lodge,+young+az&hl=en&sll=39.7306,-104.964378&sspn=0.298887,0.601501&hq=cherry+creek+lodge,&hnear=Young,+Gila,+Arizona&t=m&z=13
note we weren't even on what google maps is calling NF-3005 most of the time either. if you look at the map in satellite view, you'll see a dirt track running roughly parallel to it on the east side, in the edge of the hills - that was what we were on (so we saw the ranch down in the valley to the west of us as we passed by).
also, if you look at center of this map, you can make out an abandoned dirt air strip that we were near: https://maps.google.com/maps?q=cherry+creek+lodge,+young+az&hl=en&ll=34.010657,-110.878916&spn=0.020135,0.037594&sll=39.7306,-104.964378&sspn=0.298887,0.601501&hq=cherry+creek+lodge,&hnear=Young,+Gila,+Arizona&t=h&z=16
i haven't tried to find out anything about it yet, it hasn't been used in a LONG time, full on trees growing in the middle of it. it's within a mile of the mining ruins we saw, so perhaps some connection there?
I just checked it out on Google Earth and found the Ranch. I guess it's been awhile, but I passed by that area on FR 54 out of Young dozens of times since the 80's. I wonder when it was built? Bewildered. That's too close to my secret camping spot.
looks like the mining stuff we saw may have been a processing area for multiple asbestos mines nearby:
Wow that is my kind of trip..... I would love to run that one someday! Very cool thanks for posting the pictures.
