Transfer Case

My transfer case is the venerable np231 with slip yoke eliminator/teraflex 4:1 kit and i love it so far.

Over the last couple wheelin' runs, however, i've noticed it's gotten more and more noisy.

"it makes a shooshing sound."

Preparing for the smiley rock run i checked the fluid level and it was bone dry:eek:

So I refilled the transfer case, drove my jeep around for another day then drained it again finding no metal fragments whatsoever.

After filling it again and driving another 1000 miles (including roughly 100 off road miles) the transfer case works perfectly albeit with 150,000 miles of abuse.

Apparently, it just leaks a lot. I've lost 25% of the fluid since i last checked.

So i'm looking at JB conversions and i see a "wide chain" rebuild kit or maybe a whole new case: http://www.jbconversions.com/index2.php?pc=1

For a 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ i wonder, what would you do? rebuild it? get an atla$ with all new driveshafts?

Or maybe just leave well enough alone.

Even at 150,000 miles on it, sometimes its best to leave well enough alone. Nothing like replacing case and shafts only to possibly get a vibration or something else that wasn't there before. You know the drill... Now I will start to listen to my own preachings....lol

Reseal it, replace the fluid, and keep a closer eye on the levels...;)

I say drive it till it dies. I'd love to have a 4:1 myself, I'd hate to see somebody with a good set up give it up before it's time.

Reseal it, replace the fluid, and keep a closer eye on the levels...;)

 

I agree, you already have a lot of money in that case.

after having run it bone dry for a while, i think that you may see bearing failure sooner; who knows how much sooner.

 

if it was mine i'd take it apart and replace all the bearings and then re-seal it and put new front/rear seals in too. but i know you don't really want to wrench on it yourself... so did you find out how much it costs to just buy a freshly rebuilt one with 4-to-1 already in it?

 

i would not get an atlas and new shafts, you could open a whole new can of worms. if a rock-track will bolt in without new shafts or other mods, i would consider that instead of a rebuilt one.

If i leave it alone my concern is that the transfer case leaks at least a quarter of it's fluid in roughly the first 24 hours of driving it.

I'm worried one of the halves might have a crack allowing the fluid to drain at a rapid rate which in turn could get messy. i see ooze around the rear tail housing and speedometer cable too but it doesn't drip much, maybe one drop on the garage floor every 24 hours.

It seems to be losing the majority of it's fluid when the jeep is moving if that is at all a possibility:confused:

I agree, you already have a lot of money in that case.

 

If i reseal it would it not be wise since i'm already breaking the case open to replace the gear set, bearings, and chain as well?
