Arizona Trivia Questions

Elks Lodge on Oak St.? Former Papago Park POW camp. The Elks are in the Building that used to house the Officer's Club.

If this is wrong, I still find it to be a fascinating piece of history about the area.

Building #40 in the picture below is the current Elks lodge, the last remnants of the POW camp.

This is not the answer in the book, but it's in the same area, just down the street.

This is a very fascinating piece of history - I didn't know there was a POW camp in Phoenix. One of the trivia questions is about a POW escape, but I can't find it just now.

So does anybody want to take a stab at the answer to this one?

I know it was several Germans, that were later captured. Below is some specific info from Wiki.

The Great Papago Escape was the largest Axis prisoner-of-war escape to occur from an American facility during World War II. On the night of December 23, 1944, twenty-five Germans tunneled out of Camp Papago Park, near Phoenix, Arizona, and fled into the surrounding desert. All of the escapees were eventually recaptured without bloodshed over the next few weeks, and although most were detained within Maricopa County, a few nearly made it to the border of Mexico, which is about 130 miles south of the camp

I've heard about it. Supposedly, the POWs made some kind of rafts and headed to the salt river, expecting to float to Mexico. They didn't realize the Salt river is seasonal. :D

You guys might be thinking of the year Interstate 17 was completed Phoenix-to-Flagstaff, which was in 1978. The answer to " What year did Phoenix open its first freeway" is earlier...
