Which Tires???

Recommended Posts

mine say KoReA. Nothing from China lasts? Really? :o That's pretty much anything nowadays

Well, maybe I should say it better, most of the stuff. I guess made in vs assemblied in china makes a big difference. Made in Korea isn't too bad, now I'm thinking of the hankooks again. Why is it so hard!

I have given up on trying to buy non-Chinese. I mean when I got my a/c rebuilt I got an American made compressor. Oh really? Assembled in the U.S. from components made in China! I figure if I don't die from the tainted plastic or cheap steel, the GMOs in the food, or the radioactive fish in the oceans, then I might actually die of old age!

I just picked up the Treadwright Gaurd Dogs. They are retreads from bead to bead. They use BFG's and Goodyears for the cores but the retreads are done in the USA. They even say made in the USA on the sidewall. I have been happy with them so far, I have had them on for a few months now. Not to mention the price is great @ $750 for a set of 4 delivered. I got the one with the "kedge grip" which they say will make them last less time but they increase the grip off road. Just an option.

You have a very valid point. Sucks.

As for tires, I am a late learner on the sad reality that most of our big names have moved overseas. I guess I thought in my idealistic mind that at least one industry was still native. I work in the graphics field and even our paper is coming - more and more - from overseas. Like we have a tree shortage?

As for tires, I used BFG Mudders for years. I flirted with others like the Big O Mudder - the 7,000 mile tire - and Firestone Destination Mudders - where whole blocks of tread just tear right out. Not even on particularly tough roads. I bought my first Hankooks at Purcells and I think I b!tched about that somewhere here in this forum. They beat Discount's price by a small bit but BOY do you ever pay for it after that!

I wanted something that would not chunk out ( or as I have seen it called, "rock rash") so quickly. Since my Tacoma is used only for my offroad forays, any tire I use has a pretty short life. I was out working on FR 89 about five years ago and a whole gaggle (flock? herd? covey?) of trucks went by and about half of them had Hankooks. So I decided to try them out. Rather risky since they were cheaper than the BFGs and every time I have gone the cheaper route it has been a disaster. This time I "chose wisely."

I've had a set of these on Big Jake for two years now. I don't have the bead to beads, they weren't available when I bought mine, so the casing still reads BFG All Terrain. I have to say, these are the best off road tires I've ever used. They have excellent traction in the rocky terrain of Az, and they're pretty resistant to chunking... kind of surprising for being under a 6,000 lb. truck. They are far better than the BFG All Terrains that they replaced. The only thing I don't like about them is they don't come with any kind of road hazard warranty. So if you tear a sidewall, or even get a nail in the sidewall (this just happened to me, anything to the side of the flat part of the tread is the sidewall. The nail missed the steel belts by about 1/4 inch.) Then you have to buy another tire for full price. Bummer! But if you're willing to take the risk, I highly recommend these tires. You won't be disappointed.

Those do look awesome. I ended up settling on Treadwright Wardens (BFG A/T) for my HD. I was strongly considering the Trail Grapps too, especially since they had a 295/70/17. Are they smooth and at least remotely quiet? I had worn out old style MTR's on it before and they were soooooo bad. Loud and uncomfortable.

I love my Treadwright's so far. I haven't gotten to use them off road yet, due to ole girl not being finished yet but she is going to be ready here in the next week or so, so I hope to test them out off road. I got the ones with the Kedge grip and don't think I would do that again but live and learn.
