reybie 61 Posted October 11, 2013 I appreciate the offer kaspily, a permanent mount is probably best for me so it's always there when needed -- it will just take a little work but that's all good, I enjoy DIYing.
reybie 61 Posted October 13, 2013 After doing some research online and checking the possible mounting location in my vehicle, I will be ending up using a No Ground Plane stud and cable. This is what I can up with so far... comments appreciated. http://www.rightchannelradios.com/cb-antenna-stud-mount-lug.html http://www.rightchannelradios.com/firestik-ngp-coax-cable.html
91AzXJ 2 Posted October 14, 2013 That is very similar to what I have. I am very happy with the reception.
Russ Chung 47 Posted October 14, 2013 Why do you need a No Ground Plane kit? NGP kits are designed for vehicles made of plastic, fiberglass, wood or aluminum. A Grand Cherokee makes a good ground plane when the antenna is properly installed. A conventional CB antenna kit is less complicated than an NGP kit, and less expensive, too. reybie 61 Posted October 14, 2013 I wasn't planning on using NGP but the mounting location I have available is made of fiberglass or some sort of non-conductive material. The link below shows a pic of how a member on another forum mounted theirs, the middle pic shows where the mount is going. http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f309/sand-flag-1479462/#post14975368
reybie 61 Posted October 14, 2013 I'm looking at this NGP kit from ebay. I will not use the mount that comes with the kit but my question is on the SS spring that comes in the package. Can I skip that in the setup if I don't want to use it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/380590585773
mbuckner 132 Posted October 14, 2013 Hello, Keep the antenna mount(s) simple. Here's how a CB and a dual band radios are mounted to the back gate of a TJ: http://s1303.photobucket.com/user/mbuckner1947/library/antenna Best regards, Mike
mbuckner 132 Posted October 14, 2013 Also, I have read and been told, that the antenna tip should be at least 4" above the roof line ..... you will notice that the CB antenna tip is lower than the 2m antenna .... The CB does not have spring load at the base, therefore reduced the risk of it being ripped off ... where as the 2m antenna is more flexible and can stand more hits without damage. theksmith 3,667 Posted October 14, 2013 yes you can run that with or without a spring, you have to re-tune if you add or remove the spring later. firestik's are not flexible, i'd run the spring. alternatively if you are dead against the spring, you might get the firefly, it has some flex. as Mike alluded to, the more of the antenna that sticks above the vehicle, the better your rx/tx will be... of course within reason - too high and it'll always catch on stuff.
