Burro Creek, Alamo Lake - November 14-17, 2013!

Recommended Posts

We are just going to have a delightful time on this exploratory trip! Actually only part of it is exploratory; some of it we have done before.....

Trail/Area:

We will meet on Thursday, November 14 at the McD's in Wickenburg at 9 am.

Day One: Drive north on Highway 93 to Highway 97, where we hit dirt. Drive up through Suicide Wash and 6 Mile Crossing - across Burro Creek. Lunch at Burro Creek, then follow the road out to Signal Rd and back to Highway 93. Drive up to Wickiup and top off fuel. Drive west on Chicken Springs Road to Groom Spring, where we will camp that night. If this is too much for one day, we will find a camp site earlier. Total mileage for this day as tentatively planned is about 90 miles. (half of that is highway to get to the dirt!) The Burro Creek Trail is moderate in one or two spots...otherwise its rather easy. A lot of dirt road. But if you've never been here, you should check it out!

Day Two: Drive down to the ghost town of Signal, check it out. Easy dirt road. Then we drive up to Goldbug Mine. I mean, where else should a Ladybug go?! There is not much to see at this mine, but the trail is fun. It continues up along wilderness area, and then over to Alamo Road and Alamo Lake. These are all dirt roads, except for the trail up to Goldbug Mine...I would consider it to be a moderate challenge, shelf road. We will camp that night on the north side of Alamo Lake.

Day Three: All exploratory. The Massey Book (p 167) shows the Rawhide Mountain Trail and it goes north, around a wilderness area, past Fools Peak, and then ultimately crossing the Bill Williams River. The book says we need to have a gps handy, to find the trail across the river. And we'll need someone to wade the river to make sure its good to cross, as the book says its a hard rock bottom here. (Mike!) I would expect some - or a lot -of brush in this part of the trip, as we meander along the river and find the trail. After crossing the river, we will drive 6 miles to spend the night in Swansea - a cool old ghost town.

Day Four: Drive onto Bouse for fuel and head home. This is all dirt road, maybe some washboard, but nothing more. IF we have fuel and time, there is a cool slot canyon not far from here that I'd like to share with you, but that will depend on fuel and time and interest. Once filling up in Bouse, we will head back to Wickenburg on highway. We will aim to be back to Wickenburg by 3 pm on Sunday.

The total mileage, after topping off in Wickiup, is estimated at 125 miles. That does not include exploring some mines in the area, but they don't seem far from the trail! (hint hint) I'll be packing at least one extra jerry can of fuel, but that's because Gracie loves to suck up fuel, and most of you know I have the worse fuel economy of all. So I am not expecting that we will need extra fuel, but feel free to pack it if you want.

This is totally all dry camping. Campfires are allowed and desired. Pack some firewood!

We will be on cb channel 4.

Oh, and you know me, we will have one nice potluck dinner and dessert on this trip! And probably some cookies.

IF there is a major rain storm right before this trip, we will need to cancel or adjust....as we have some major crossings here...Burro Creek, Big Sandy River, and Bill Williams River.

This trip will be limited to 10 vehicles.

Ladybug, I've been dying to do a trip out to that area, and the description you offered essentially echoes where I'd like to go, but unfortunately, I am about out of vacation time for the year. If you happen to head out to this area after Jan 1 however, post it and count me in. But as for this one, I have to pass. DARN!
