Backpacking

Recommended Posts

Been getting my gear together lately, and finally ordering some things I have been wanting(eBay app is bad, lol) . How many others do we have that enjoy backpacking? Any interested in trying to start up some trips? I am planning on trying to do at least one overnighter, even if it is just one of the trails in the Sups every time I am home. But have some bigger destinations in mind also- Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Canyon Lands and The Arizona Trail in sections.

NEED:

-Quality boots and socks.

-Appropriate clothing.

-Comfortable Pack, in the right size for you.

-Camera.

-Shelter- tent, tent hammock or tarp.

-Good light weight sleeping bag.

-Water storage, hydration bladder and water storage. Recommend Platypus brand.

-Quality light weight stove, recommend MSR.

-Pan set with utensils.

-First aide kit.

-Repair kit with spare parts or patches for all other items.

-Leatherman.

-Rope and para cord.

-Towel.

LUXURY/COMFORT:

-Sleeping pad.

-Dishware.

-Quality water purifier. ***For me this is required, even on long day hikes.***

-Pillow.

-SPOT

-Maps or GPS, for some this comes natural or certain areas are well signed.

-Shoes for water exploration.

-Shovel.

-Saw/hatchet

-Roll up camp chair.

-Solar charger.

-Fresh foods.

The better shape you are in, the more trails that are open to your exploration. But you can start anywhere, and backpacking will always help you get in shape. I am stubborn and have pretty good endurance thanks to having a job that demands it when Arctic storms hit, but am working on getting back in shape and this is the kind of exercise I enjoy.

That sounds like the gear my jeep carries lol. That's a lot of stuff to backpack but it all makes sense. I'll have to start getting some gear together and give it a shot.

lol, it is really similar to what you should carry on back country wheeling trips. Unfortunately backpacking gear is like vehicle parts, you get what you pay for. The quality light weight stuff gets pricey at times, but you really can tell the quality difference and shave weight when ounces mean so much. One way that always helps shave weight is to try and share equipment, especially the stuff that you almost never use.

Let me know if you want to go sometime, like I said I am gonna set up some trips after the 1st of the year. I am up for easy or difficult, glutton for punishment and pushing my limits.

Post up your trip, hopefully I have my gear together by then. I travel all over the country for work but very rarely get to take my jeep. Back packing would be a great way to get out on the weekends.

I work in Alaska, so could I am able to fly someplace and do a trip on my way up to work or on my way home. Part of why I love working a rotating schedule with 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off. I will let you know for sure, actually just ordered some new books tonight to research some more trails.

Buddy and mine are actually preparing to get into this next year. Make sure you post up when your planning something! If it works out, we'll tag along.

Sounds good, I have some books on order with trips in Arizona and Utah. Looking into some stuff on California and talking about setting up some trips to Colorado where my roommate up here at work grew up exploring.

I used to do a bit of hiking back in Michigan back in the day and would love to get back into it. I have a buddy who has been hiking and backpacking all over the southwest, and the world for that matter. I will ask him if he has any recommendations on places that are a must see.
