theksmith 1,132 Posted May 6, 2014 i had seen that linked from gpsfiledepot before: http://gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/621/ ona simliar note, but not to that level of detail - the SMA (surface management agency) info is publicly available in multiple formats. it shows whether an area is BLM, State Trust, National Forest, etc. - http://www.geocommunicator.gov/GeoComm/services.htm#Download i use the CalTopo rendering of that info in AlpineQuest on my Android tablet. this is what it looks like (and in the AlpineQuest app you can adjust the layer opacity to whatever you want): http://caltopo.com/map.html#ll=33.14303,-111.1698&z=13&b=t&a=sma edit - i just noticed that the onXmaps stuff is available for iOS or Android for only $30 per state, sounds like a good deal to get more detail than just public boundaries. the Android version has a free trial available... JIMinSVAZ 0 Posted May 6, 2014 theksmith, I downloaded the android app last night and it has great functionality. It does have an "offline" cached capability too which is an almost needed feature for some of the places I go. The one part I dislike is that the mobile apps are like you said $30 per state, but it's also per year subscription... So initially this is cheaper, however it could become very expensive over time. I currently plan our outdoor adventures using Google Earth and track the actual route taken using the android app "My Tracks". I think I may try the $40 version for Google Earth. This is a one time purchase as apposed to the $30 subscription of the android app, and I think (hope) I'd be able to export my maps including their additional layered data the same way I do now. theksmith 1,132 Posted May 6, 2014 i doubt you can get the maps out of google earth an onto any sort of other device, even their basecamp version doesn't say anything about letting you load those maps on devices (unless i skipped over it). maybe email them and confirm but that's just my guess. of course you could plan routes using the map data while at home and export your created tracks to a mobile devices... but my guess is that's it. let us know what you find out! EDIT - this page does actually say the basecamp maps can be downloaded to a GPS: http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/sd-vs-download - i'm still not sure what format you could get the maps out of google earth in that could load on a device though?
