(OT/non-4x4) D.C. & VA Family Summer Trip 2014

Recommended Posts

More days in VA...

we visited part of the Blue Ridge Parkway (a 469 mile long scenic highway) that runs through my home county.

an overlook not far from the parkway:

one of the main attractions on the parkway is Mabry Mill, a waterwheel powered mill built in the early 1900's.

the waterwheel powered several things besides the actual grinding mill - including a sawmill, lathe, jig-saw and more.

these were some of the original grinding wheels from the mill:

other items from the same era:

...including remnants of a moonshine still:

and some weaving/spinning implements:

a lady was demonstrating weaving baskets - they also had a blacksmith but we were too early for the demonstration.

to be continued (final day coming up!)...

The Last Day

on our final day of the trip, we made the long drive back to Dulles Airport. we left with a couple hours to spare to account for the unexpected.

as it turned out the drive went quick so we had time to visit the Dulles portion of the National Air and Space Museum, officially known as the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. this one blew the downtown version out of the water and i highly recommend a visit to it.

i'll just let the pictures do most of the talking this time...

I LOVED the Air Museum @ Dulles… Was THE highlight of my trip to the Outer Banks of NC last year… :D;)

Thanks for sharing the pics. I have something like 750 of the museum there, but NONE of them turned out as good as yours… :o
