Saturday 6/28/2014: Tablet/Phone based GPS/Map Clinic: Phoenix, AZ

Recommended Posts

I have NO phone or tablet GPS experience at all! I have used an old handheld GPS and paper maps ALOT.

With that said, for Fathers Day I was given a Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 that I will be bringing along to learn on.

Thank you Kristoffer for the great information today! Even though I don't have a tablet yet AND I was a major Loser failing to upload the sample apps to my mobile device, I was still able to gain a lot of knowledge about the various android apps for mapping and their various features. I had a great time at the clinic and it was fun to see everybody!

some resources i mentioned in the class:

Garmin Basecamp (free for PC or Mac) - great for planning trips on your desktop computer and then saving the tracks/waypoints as GPX to load on your favorite mobile app. also much easier to edit tracks on this i think than on any mobile app: http://www.garmin.com/en-US/shop/downloads/basecamp

GPSFileDepot topo maps for Garmin Basecamp and Garmin GPS units. Basecamp only comes with a very basic world map, you'll need something better to reference when planning trips: http://gpsfiledepot.com/maps/search/editorschoice/

you can also use Google Earth to plan and edit routes/tracks/waypoints. it supports reading GPX files (just drag and drop the file on to it to import), but i think it only exports KML/KMZ format (last time i checked). Newer apps will work with KML, but GPX is the older standard that you'll find most people still share trip info with: https://www.google.com/earth/

and the big one, for Premium Club members only, here are the pre-cached topo maps for mobile devices:
