reybie 74 Posted January 8, 2015 We planned on doing this last year driving from Sedona to I-17 but the forest service site said the road was closed to I-17. I checked again today and still the same thing. Is that a seasonal thing or more of a permanent closure? http://goo.gl/nm49hE
K7VZ 15 Posted January 8, 2015 Seasonal. They close it when there's snow or other weather.
jgaz 606 Posted January 8, 2015 If you don't get a definitive answer, let me know. I can email a friend in Flag that makes the "commute" down to Sedona several times a month. He is known to prefer the scenic route so he should know

theksmith 4,157 Posted January 8, 2015 as Virgil said, it's closed in winter, always has for as long as i've known of the road. http://www.fs.usda.gov/detailfull/coconino/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprdb5339811 maybe Jim can tell us the exact dates they consider winter? jgaz 606 Posted January 9, 2015 This was just sent by my Flagstaff friend: "The road would definitely be closed at this time due to the 17 inches of snow we received last week . I just flew over the area and it is snowy and muddy - a sure sign the gates are up." He also said, in his opinion, they tend to close the road sooner and open it later now then in years past. Budget concerns?? Hope this helps Jim
reybie 74 Posted January 9, 2015 Thanks for checking! Probably have to check it out in the summer/spring time.
thatoneguyaz 0 Posted January 10, 2015 Yeah I have also experienced this. We had came down into Sedona from visiting a friend (Jeff on these forums) up in Flagstaff and was going to camp. It was evening time and it had been a long day messing with the Jeep. We got halfway up Schnebly to the point where its closed. It was getting dark and we were so tired, we ended up just going back down, getting on the freeway, and going home LOL.
Ladybug 505 Posted January 11, 2015 They have also been known to close this trail in the spring and fall for the elk migration....That keeps it closed longer, whether there is snow or not. smiles, ladybug
