George came up with a great way to renew the headliner in our truck, so I thought I'd share it here.

The thin fabric was peeling off the foam backing, so he took the headliner out of the truck and then very carefully peeled off all the fabric. In a few places some of the foam came away with the fabric, so he filled in the holes with regular painter's caulk. The caulking shrank as it dried, so he had to re-caulk a few of them.

Then he took some the roof-coating* he uses (a white elastomeric liquid product available at most DIY Home Stores or Hardware Stores) and diluted it half & half with water. Using a small paint roller (2-3" long), he applied a heavy, even layer on the foam and then let it dry really well (it took a couple days to dry). After the first coating, the subsequent applications didn't soak in as much, so less product went on as he then applied 3 more thin coats, letting them dry in between.

Finally, he mixed a batch of the diluted roof-coating and added some regular gray latex paint to more closely match the interior color of the truck, and applied 2 more coats with that.

After it dried completely he re-installed the headliner, and it looks amazing. It's still acoustic, it's easier to clean, plus he says it will last forever.

*George says that regular latex paint could be used in place of roof-coating for the same effect. He just happened to have some roof-coating laying around, so that's what he used.

Looks really nice. George is a very inventive ... and very attached to that roof-coating: always finds new uses for it :)
