theksmith 4,029 Posted November 19, 2015 11/28/2015 Saturday: Black Canyon City Overlook: near Black Canyon City, AZ: Easy/Moderate: WEATHER PERMITTING! another trail day on Thanksgiving weekend! if you decide you want to shop on Black Friday and therefore can't make our other run (here...), then join us on this easier one! Meet: 9:00 AM in the parking lot of the McDonalds on CareFree Hwy just East of the I-17 map: https://goo.gl/maps/bESGKrbsEvo Important Info: - WEATHER PERMITTING! if there have been heavy recent rains then this trip will be canceled as much of the trail can become a complete mud bog. we would tear up the trail and could easily get stuck if we attempted it in such conditions. - bring plenty of water and a lunch. - expect to be out most of the day. About the Trail: this trail is #36 in the newer Wells AZ book. it is rated moderate by Mr. Wells, but i believe it is on the easier side of that rating. expect a few steep sections and possible washouts requiring a bit of articulation. the trail heads east away from I-17 and then loops back to an overlook of the Black Canyon City area. after the overlook we turn around and head back out the same way we came in. the book says 3+ hours one-way. Rig Requirements: - a high clearance 4x4 with low range. - aggressive tread tires & skid plates on anything important. - a cb or ham radio if you want to hear us talk about you. - seat belts, current registration, insurance, all that legal stuff you need to be on the road with anyway.
