Gadget is finally getting gears this week (they'd been on backorder for nearly 2 months)!

Out of curiosity - what are you putting in? Ratio/brand?

I was curious, are you gonna be done with the break in by next Friday for Mike's night run?

Joe noticed my rear brake pads were nearly gone while he was doing the gears, so i replaced those this morning.

i honestly don't know how to choose pads... pretty much everything now is ceramic, so really it just comes down to each brand saying their particular compound is the best. i've tried the popular Hawk brand before and didn't really notice any difference in performance versus cheap generic pads. i have not tried EBC's green/yellowstuff pads yet.

this time i went with Bosch QuietCast BC1274 at $35 for a full set of 4 rear pads and stainless clips.

break-in complete!

here's what i notice going from 4.10's to 5.13's (automatic, 37s):

  • the change is more subtle than i expected.
  • beforehand, it seemed like i couldn't accelerate even a little without it needing to downshift temporarily, that seems to happen less often now.
  • 1st gear in 4-low feels noticeably lower/slower, could just be in my head though.
  • i had a very mild vibration around 90 MPH before, it seems like it's moved down closer to 80 MPH now.
  • cruising at 75 MPH on flat land now spins right at 3k RPM (but i didn't take note of what it was before).

overall this ratio at this tire size feels well balanced for both street and highway use. it was certainly a necessary change if i'm going to tow anything, but again not a dramatic difference just driving around town.

did the post gears break-in diff fluid change yesterday - Gadget's at 124,900 miles!

and for only $36 and a few minutes of my time, i now have a more civilized hood opening experience. this hood strut kit was just 4 bolts on each side, no cutting or drilling.
