Big Bear Lake Adventure 2016 Picture Thread

The trail was super steep a lot of the way, on mogully terrain similar to the area near Sunflower Mine trail here in AZ. I realized later why my neck hurt the next day; it's because I was trying to see over the hood while we were going up these crazy steep hills! Part of the way up we got this awesome view of Silverwood Lake:

We all regrouped a little further up the trail in the shade:

 

 

We had to move further on to a wider place on the trail so we could have lunch. Wheeling with Riddler is cool because he carries a shade canopy we all shared:

 

 

 

 

After lunch we went through an area where there were optional obstacles everywhere. From where we watched it almost looked like defectivemonk was going to scrape the passenger side of his Jeep on a rock! Pictures don't do it justice how sideways he looked.

 

 

Russ spotted him on a different line to the right.

 

 

At the end of the trail we regrouped at an OHV staging area before heading out for Deep Creek and Lake Arrowhead.

So we drove out to Deep Creek but then decided against swimming there, and then made our way to Lake Arrowhead where we aired up and many of us said our good-byes to everyone leaving the next morning.

 

A few of us stuck around Big Bear one more day and ran a trail Sunday morning, that's up next!

On Sunday G & I with theksmith, ChrisD riding with MaddogJeeper and defectivemonk ran Jacoby Canyon north of Big Bear. The trail guidebook said it's a moderate trail with some nice rock outcroppings to look at. At the airdown spot theksmith noticed that MaddogJeeper's passenger rear tire and wheel had a lot of diff. fluid on it; it looked like the rear axle tube seal was leaking. He couldn't run the trail like that so he went back to town and Christian hitched a ride with theksmith.

 

Jacoby Canyon trail begins at the Doble Mine area.

 

 

It was an easy trail into the canyon.

One little patch of rocks is why it's rated moderate.

 

 

 

We passed a group having lunch, nice Jeeps!

 

 

 

The trail slowly climbed out of the canyon out into the desert to the north. Parts of the trail we a little rocky here too as we worked our way toward the highway.

 

 

 

At the end of the trail we found some shade where we sat to eat lunch. Then we aired up and said our good-byes to theksmith and defectivemonk who were both leaving town. We had one more night at the hotel but we were in good company. ChrisD and MaddogJeeper were still around, so we sat outside having a few drinks and reminiscing about the adventure.

 

MaddogJeeper was able to get his Jeep fixed first thing Monday morning thanks to All J Products - Big Bear's Jeep & 4x4 Shop. Dennis was on the road home by mid-morning.

 

G & I went back the same way we'd driven in, except we skipped the dirt road from Baldwin Lake to Pioneer Town. This time we took Hwy. 18 all the way down the mountain to the high desert and headed east from there. Outside Parker, AZ we stopped at the Rice Shoe Fence for a photo-op. The place used to have that kind-of cool oddity thing going for it, but now days it's taking on the appearance of a trash heap!

I forgot to mention this awesome Land Cruiser we saw in town, and then pulled up to where we were airing down Thursday to say hi. They were really nice people who had been all over the place in this machine, and I gave them a[n] Offroad Passport card. Maybe they will log on here and see this!

we arrived Tuesday to have some extra family time before the real trip started. Wednesday we did some mini-golf with Chris (defectivemonk) and then Aimee, Brady and I drove a couple kart races.

 

 

 

the "easy trails" group did some great scenic trails on Friday while the hardcore folks were off breaking things. one took us on a long somewhat shelfy and very curvy way down the backside of Clark Summit.

 

 

 

i was one of the few that got to walk down to the Devil's Hole at deep creek. It would have been a great scenic place, but the trash and trashy folks kinda ruined it. I did get a couple pics without showing the toilet paper, baby socks, and other randomness that was near the water.

 

 

 

 

i got rig pics of most everyone as they finished up the difficult John Bull trail.

The area between Silverwood Lake and Lake Arrowhead that we ran on Saturday, July 23rd is now closed due to the Pilot Fire. The closure area includes two of the trails we ran that day: 2N33 and 2N17X

What a strange coincidence, that's the 2nd time a fire started right after we visited a place with Russ. The 1st was Barker Ranch, it burned a few days after we were there.
