Steering Shaft for an XJ with 4.5 lift ??

Recommended Posts

Ok, got a "new" problem with the XJ.

The steering shaft on the XJ is looooose, so I was going to get a new stock shaft, but started thinking, the XJ has 4.5"'s of lift and will a stock shaft be ok or should/is there a relatively affordable shaft for lifted XJ's...

Any input is needed before I pull the trigger on a stock shaft.

Thanks,

Matt

Are you sure it's the steering shaft, or is there play in the steering box? steering box play is common on older vehicles and there is some adjustment in the box, as well as the box can rebuilt (probably easier to just get a rebuilt one from autozone though in that case)... and then sometimes if the TRE's are old on the draglink/tierod, that can also make for sloppy feeling steering... just throwing out some alternative ideas...

oh and the actual steering shaft on a lifted XJ is no different, the pitman arm may or may not be a non-factory drop-style, not sure on 4.5" lift if a drop arm was needed, someone with XJ can comment

Yea, its the shaft itself. I can "wiggle" it pretty good right at the point were it slides up and down.

I believe that the only pieces on the front steering/suspension that hasn't been changed on the $#$%#2 thing is the power steering pump, steering box, and the shaft.

I dont know how a steering shaft can get loose, maybe the u-joint is worn out. My XJ has a loose steering gear shaft that makes the steering loose. George:cool:

I'm guessing just wear and tear ....it is right in the middle of the shaft, where the to pieces slide into one another.

I found one on e-bay from a company called my4x4store out of Utah for 98 + 10 for shipping. Says it made by Crown , so I may pull the trigger on it . I've got a trip next month and don't need the shaft coming apart on me while driving:eek:

i have to adjust my steering at least once per week to keep the steering wheel somewhat straight..

i'm considering an over-the-knuckle type set-up or maybe even hydraulic steering assist. we don't have a reputable xj steering specialist that knows aftermarket suspension set-ups i know of. i've been talking to Hunter in Tempe about it but i think he's more fabwork specialist and less mechanical work specialist. i see now you are not local. sorry if i "steered" your thread off course Campn'.. this is an issue i've been dealing with too for a long time. thanks for posting!

Have you seen the steering I have on my XJ? http://www.higherground4x4.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2130

nice set up. I see you even have some RE stuff in there...but it is the steering shaft that is loose...the thingy between the steering column and the steering box. I may go to pick n pull and se what I can scrounge there before throwing a hundred bucks down for a new one.

Now what years are compatable with my 93..hmmmm:confused:
