On the last day with group two on our way to the Death Valley Mine we were flagged down by two young men. They had managed to get their car stuck in the deep sand. The Ranger they were talking to was not super helpful and we volunteered to recover their brand new leased Dodge Challenger. The guys spent the night in the cold with no sleeping bags and a lack of much to drink other than whiskey. After recovering them ORP gave them water and some snack bars. They were really thankful for the help and hopefully scared enough to not repeat that dumb move. Here is a video of part of the recovery. We had to get them turned around after which required more towing and much pushing. https://flic.kr/p/SsVSCq
One has to wonder how "inebriated/incapaciated" they must have been to even attempt such a path with a Challenger to begin with. Hopefully, this was one of life's lessons (aka "teachable moments") for them... ;)

Here are some pictures from Group #1, Day 2; and you can see all of my pictures here: 2017-04-09 Mojave East

After a SUPER windy night we packed up and got ready to explore further south, except for Team Curly who went north, retracing our path to the highway. The crazy wind was aggravating Devon's allergies something fierce so they decided to go home. Once we got on the right trail (after almost going the wrong way) we proceeded through a very scenic Joshua Tree forest.

Our first stop was at Riley's Camp where we saw all kinds of old relics of yesteryear scattered about.

A little further down the road we came to this grave site right alongside the trail

Soon after that we stopped at the Morning Star Mine

Then we stopped at the Mojave Memorial which I only got a picture of from far away before my camera battery died

We were on pavement then, and we took Cima Road to Cima, CA., which is not much more than an intersection nowadays. We decided to do our next trail backward from our original plan, so we (technically) stayed on Cima Road except this was the dirt portion. Our first point of interest was the Death Valley Mine where we found a lot of buildings and mining stuff and ate lunch. While we were there two other offroading groups also showed up there, which was a little surreal since we were so off the beaten track.

Our great looking group at the Death Valley Mine

Both of the houses at the Death Valley Mine had grapevines growing up chicken-wire on the outside of the porches. Some of the plants were still alive, and you could tell that this was an attempt at shading the homes. The back porch on the big house was drooping down, ready to fall off.

After lunch we continued south and stopped at Thomas Place where we found a series interconnected corrals. The location was beautiful, set in a Joshua Tree forest overlooking a wide valley on one side and a rocky hill on the other.

We went just a few more miles before we came to the Mojave Road, and we took it east a few miles before going south again on Black Canyon Road and the Macedonia Canyon Loop.

Hauling butt to the next trail

Once we were in Macedonia Canyon we found mining relics almost immediately and stopped to check it out.

We continued into the canyon until we came to our our pre-plotted way points, and turned off in a wash leading to the Columbia Mine.

After walking around the mining site we retraced our path down the wash back to the main trail. We were trying to decide where to camp and discussing strategy for trying to escape the still prevailing wind. Team MzPriss decided to head for home rather than suffer another brutal night, so we were headed back to pavement where they would go south to I-40.

When we got to the road we discovered an unusual obstacle; the railroad bridge was too short! I was standing up through the passenger window of Smurftruck checking our (lack of) roof clearance, when I happened to notice Group #1 pull up on the other side of the tracks!

33188421633_e1b65b8c9a_b.jpg

They thought we went into Macedonia Canyon from this end, and noticing no tire tracks at the railroad bridge a quarter mile north, thought we must have gone in under this one. Anyhow, MzPrizz managed to fit underneath this railroad bridge, and the rest of us went to the one up the tracks and barely squeezed through.

33959763146_fcd5786dbb_b.jpg

The rest of us in Group #1 went back to Thomas Place, thinking we could set up camp inside the corrals, hoping the wooden barrier would block out the cold fierce wind that only threatened to get worse according to the weather forecasts. In the end we chose to drive home that night instead of freezing our butts off.

In spite of the unseasonably brisk weather it was a really fun trip. Our estimation of the areas we covered were correct: there is a lot so see in this remote desert region! Thanks again to everyone who joined us on this adventure!

my photos from Group #2's adventure...

i was jamming out and missed the main turn for Goffs, so Google suggested i get off the freeway on a random dirt road and head north... which worked out just fine - yay shortcut!

the Desert Heritage Museum was closed, so i just hung out and took a few pics of the place from outside the fence while waiting for everyone else to show up.

once we headed into the preserve, i noticed a lot of plants had this weird hairy growth, which i assume is some sort of parasitic plant or fungus (along the line of mistletoe).

we explored all around the Hart mining area, but couldn't get into the main pits mine due to ongoing operations and some pesky No Trespassing signs. one particular spur trail did take us up in elevation and provided a great view of the eastern end of the preserve.
