theksmith 1,208 Posted September 18, 2017 this an overnight exploratory trip on some easy to moderate dirt tracks east of Globe, AZ. i checked out this area briefly about a month ago and there were several old mine shack ruins and a great scenic canyon overlook. maps indicate possibly more mining stuff to see and an overlook of the main Salt River Canyon. Itinerary: meetup Saturday morning in Globe, head to the trail about an hour away. wheel, stop for lunch, and explore all afternoon. there may be some short hikes to get to mines or scenic areas. setup camp before sunset at a canyon overlook. Sunday pack up camp and hit the trail by 9:00am. there's only a little more trail to explore on the way out so we should be back in Globe by 1pm at the very latest. we'll stop for a lunch if we don't hit pavement before noon. Trail Info: these trails are rated moderate. there were some ruts and mild washouts but overall no rock crawling that i remember. this should be suitable for a stock high-clearance 4x4 trucks/SUVs such as a Tacoma/Wrangler/etc. required: a high-clearance 4x4 with low range. all-terrain or better tires. at least one tow point. all state/federal legal requirements must be met (seat-belts, lights, insurance, etc.). recommended: CB or ham radio. sway bar disconnects, skid plates on important areas, rock rails, oversize aggressive tires, mild lift, low gearing, lockers, etc. Meetup: North-East corner of the Walmart parking lot in Globe, AZ. Map: https://goo.gl/maps/rZ4S1AJhvJM2Saturday 9/30/2017, please be fueled up and ready to leave at 10:30am! Other Important Info: the trip will be canceled if heavy rains are forecasted or if it rains a ton the Thursday/Friday before. much of the trail is the red-clay type dirt that turns to a horribly evil mud when wet. CB channel 4, or ham simplex frequency 146.460 Mhz bring 2 lunches, a dinner, a breakfast and plenty of water/drinks/snacks. the camping spot is a little over 5,000 ft in elevation and based on the forecast for Globe i'm guessing a high of 80* and lows around 50*.
