1998 Jeep Cherokee XJ Build

Thanks everyone for the warm welcoming!

 

Jeep should be back and running this week!

 

On the hunt now for either a 29 Spline Chrysler 8.25 rear, or ideally a Dana 44 for the XJ to replace my Dana 35.

Ever thought about an 8.8? Same strength as a 44 and rear disc brakes too.

Semi mock up of completed axle. Resprayed, every seal and bearing replaced, outer axle tube seals (not pictured) and LockRight locker installed on the D30! Ready for install

Reinstalled the carpet after a thorough cleaning. While it was out I soundproofed/insulated most of the floor with a foil-type insulator and spray adhesive (no picture unfortunately)

Solid option. Have limited access to a welder to weld the shock mounts and leaf spring perches unfortunately. But definitely an idea!

EDIT:

 

Divided the last 2 numbers stamped on the ring gear 39 11, and divided them (39/11 = 3.5454). So rounded up its 3.55, which is stock gearing. Thanks!

 

Need some advice - opened up a D30 axle and saw this stamped on the ring gear (488). Am I correct in saying that this is 4.88 ratio? If it was standard as I was told it would be stamped with 3.55?

Got the axle back under the Jeep. Had a slight issue of realigning my adjustable track bar from Rubicon Express, hence it still being on the axle stands. Ran out of time as I had to get back to school! Will be working on it this week. I am also still waiting for my CavFab upper adjustable control arms which were ordered almost 2 months ago!

Replaced my center console switch panel to Carling style switches, to run my LED's in the front bumper and electric engine fan

Coming along nicely.

 

Are you planning to take out the rear seat after mounting your high lift there? I don't see how it could fit with seat down & no modification.

No I plan on keeping my rear seat. Yes - you have to remove the center hump (either cut and weld new flat piece) or hammer a section down as far as I understand

Looking forward to see how it works out. I've been tying mine to the back of my rear seat with bungee cords for years.

Picked up a Chrysler 8.25 straight out of a 97 XJ (170 000 Miles, Factory limited slip!) for a good deal. Thanks to fellow XJ’er Dave from Cottonwood, AZ. Will be doing a bench rebuild on it (bearings, seals, repaint) and a caliper swap. Not in urgent need so will be done in a while!
