What's in your vehicle bug-out/go/emergency bag?

Recommended Posts

What do you guys think one of these set up costs? I realize it will be a guesstimate, I am just thinking I need to restructure my plan of attack on upgrading my jeep and focus more on safety.

When/why would you "bug out"?

I keep my kit simple and try to have items that can function for different problems. I pack for the trip because to do otherwise, at least for me, things would become out of date and useless. I have found that a few maxipads work great for bad cuts on self or even a torn pad on your four footed partner. Leave them in their sanitary packages until needed. 4 X 4's and good medical tape is a must as well and don't forget the Steri-strips. They can pull a deep cut together almost as well as stitches will.

Working in a jail with a lot of blood and body fluids, I have grown to really appreciate latex gloves. Keep many pairs in the right sizes and change them out often. they do dry out. I have bought some pretty expensive kits from Zee and other companies but I don't anymore. They are a bit pricey and each item fits in a special spot in the box and when you use it, you have to buy the replacement from the company for it to fit in that same spot. I have also found that I can come up with materials for splints etc. from other supplies or even from the area that I am in. Many times you can make do if you are creative. But I have also replaced U joints in the field with a pair of fencing pliers, a 70 penny spike and a single bit axe. Not letting the situation overwelm you is your most important tool to carry along. Just my two cents worth.

mine has grown over time, i started out with the best adventure medical kit i could afford at the time, threw in things that i already had like spare clothes, jacket, book, cash, junky flashlight and multi-tool. then as i had money i upgraded or added things till where it is today - just remember the basics to start with: first-aid, water/food, shelter, warmth.

you can get several levels of pre-made bags at this website, including a "deluxe" Bill Burke edition bag for nearly $400: http://www.bugoutbagz.com/proddetail.php?prod=BPP030

i prefer to put my own together to be more familiar with exactly what is in it and how i would use the items, but i can understand the allure of buying an already-assembled product too.

Just like theksmith said, it's primarily a kit for emergencies and to keep something small from ruining your day on the trail; e.g. bad taco bell or wet socks.

That being said, I have enough stuff in there in case your vehicle is diabled, the sun is going down, and you're looking at a long walk by yourself. Now if you are in this situation, you planned poorly, but are prepared for it.

I also take my bag with me if I'm driving long distance, camping, etc. I just like to know that if I did end up in the desert walking somewhere that I'm not going to die for lack of preparation.

I do have a day pack with the K-BAR, 5 different ways to start a fire, a military poncho big enough to be used

for a shelter, etc, etc, etc ..... all accumulated over that last 10 years ....

If I am alone and the Jeep goes down, the farthest that I would bug-out would be the distance that I could

safely get back to it before dark. It is my "safe haven".....

Even if you did not plan, staying close to your vehicle gives you the best odds that you will be found ....

Also, a moving subject compounds the problem of a Search & Rescue team trying to find you ......

Just my $.02's

I am constantly traveling so a bag like this would be perfect for my work life to. Well at least for the jobs I drive to.

If you want to start an emergency pack for your vehicle, check out

the nylon ALICE packs ... small size .. they are inexpensive and you can

pack a lot of supplies in one ....

That's what I started with .....
