dougnsue 5 Posted June 4, 2018 Hi, We're Doug and Sue in Prescott. We are new to 4-wheeling, having bought a stock 2000 Grand Cherokee last Nov. and wanting to start enjoying it off road. theksmith 3,852 Posted June 4, 2018 welcome! growing your experience at the same time as your vehicle is a smart thing. too many people over-build their rig and then aren't comfortable with the situations they get themselves into! the WJ is a great platform for mild trails and with just a few mods it can easily grow-up to do moderate trails without breaking the bank. i'd recommend you ensure you have a transfer case skid plate from the factory before you leave the forest roads for any real trails. also, most groups will require you to have recovery points to attend a run - a rear trailer hitch will work fine for that though (or factory tow hooks). then you might look at getting some real all-terrain tires as a first mod - they'll provide better grip and more puncture resistance than a street tire. feel free to post threads asking about anything at all that you're curious about with regard to the 4-wheeling world - everyone here is pretty friendly Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

dougnsue 5 Posted June 7, 2018 Man, that was a great welcoming! Thank you all for the advice/suggestions. I'm glad to see it appears we won't be the only ones with a WJ, as a starting point. We have a leaking front drive shaft bearing leaking that we’ll have repaired this month. My stock tires are 245/70r16. I want a little taller tire that will fit within the stock opening. I don’t want to cut any outside fender. Trimming an inter fender is not as much of a concern. Any suggestions on tire size? I'm looking at Coopers Adventures AT tires right now. I saw they also have a Discoverer AT3 or ATP but haven’t read allot about them yet. Any feedback would be appreciated. I know the best way to learn anything new is to ask questions of those doing it. We have a trailer hitch already and in line to have a 2” lift installed. I have a set of tow hooks for the front I hope to install this month. I had a left hip replaced May 7 and I’m a little behind my schedule to get back to work. My fault probably, I over did some stuff at only a couple of weeks post op and am paying for it now.
