most of the forests are open again now thanks to the monsoons - so i'm going camping!

OPEN TO ANYONE - just reply to this thread to sign-up! please let me know when you might arrive so i can watch for you.

When:

next weekend - i'll be going up sometime Friday 8/17
and will come home Saturday evening or Sunday morning. feel free to join me whenever.

Where:

the area is somewhat near Heber, in the Apache Sitgreaves NF Black Mesa district - on the edge of a shallower section of the Mogollon Rim.

this is all on forest roads suitable for a 2wd truck or high-clearance SUV
. the last part is just a bit too rocky for a car or low riding crossover style SUV.

- from Payson, take the AZ-260 East towards Heber.

- turn right on FR300 at the sign for Black Canyon Lake.

- then...

-- follow this map:
https://caltopo.com/m/U63R

-- or, use these coords:
34.2727, -110.6510

once you are on that final faint road, it's very bumpy so it feels like a long ways. but keep going till you come to the barbed wire fence with a small "tribal boundary" sign on it. look to your left and you'll see a nice large flat area and seldom used fire ring in the tall pines about 100ft from the road. there are some tracks winding their way over to that spot, that's our camp!

Other Info:

this is dispersed/dry camping (i.e. no facilities). there is room for a couple smaller trailers.

this time of year you can almost count on a short rain shower each day, so
make sure your tent/shelter is waterproof!

i'll go for at least one little hike - there's a nice easy road/trail to walk on that leads to a small pond, neat views, and lots of wildlife.

i'm not planning to do any offroad trails myself. there are a few POI's on a forest road loop nearby that's in
the Massey book
if you're bored just sitting at camp. there's also a small lake within a 20 minute drive on gravel roads.

Lichen

MzPriss & mystery date

JohnPa (visiting for a bit Saturday)

I'm seriously contemplating this one....but David won't join me as he has committed to camping with me the following weekend. I'm not working on Fridays now so could easily be there at any time.

it's just me this time too - Aimee & B have a banquet to attend.

the map says 9569J - but i don't remember if it was signed at all. the other roads are large graded roads, but that last one is much more faint.

however, you can start watching for it after you pass the intersection of 300 and 110 (the 110 is well marked).
