G & D's new (to us) TJ Rubi

Recommended Posts

G probably already knows about this but i recently saw a thread saying some 05 and 06 TJ's have an issue with the "OPDA cam gear". i didn't read through it all to see if there was something you could do to prevent the problem, but you might want to check it out: https://www.wranglerforum.com/f282/06-opda-cam-gear-148954.html

I know about it and called the dealership, they said there is no recall on my vin #. I will pull the OPDA and look at it.

G wrapped up all the work on the rear suspension yesterday. Here are a couple 'after' pictures:

No more curved springs thanks to ARTEC Industries Spring Relocation Brackets (fit perfectly without modification or messaging) and had a 1" stretch option, which G used.

The new Jeep was released from ICU and put back into the regular garage until it's time to tear into the front suspension stuff.

Hopefully George tightened up those crawler joint bolts.. Jeep looks great and sounds burly without the muffler.

Installed lockout hubs, different wheels, Rubicrawler crawl box, swapped the 241or t-case for a 231j case. Should be ready for a shake down soon. :)

May I ask what the upside is to using the 231 instead of the 241

The 241 with the Rubicrawler engaged has a 10.5 to 1 crawl ratio, that was too low for me. The 231 with the Rubicrawler has a 7 to 1 crawl ratio that is perfect for the hard trails I like to run. I will also have a 272 to 1 ratio to run easy trails and sand duns.

Sorry for missing huge amounts of build thread details! In a nutshell, George went through the entire suspension, re-aligning things that bound up or scraped, replaced bushings and joints, moved the rear axle back a bit, beefed up the front axle and installed locking hubs, swapped the 241 rubicon transfer-case with a 231J, and put in a Rubi-Crawler, upgraded drive-shafts, new front bumper and winch, new rear tire carrier and jambouree rack plus something I probably missed. ;)

Anyhow, I'm happy to report that we had a successful maiden voyage in the new TJ over the weekend. The Jeep performed admirably on the highway and on the trail. It ran cool even with the A/C on, which is a huge priority for me because it's kind of how we got into this situation in the first place. The suspension worked really well on the moderate trail we did, although it might need minor adjustments after we run harder trails on down the road. We're currently not bump stopped at all and clearances looked good. The Rubi-Crawler is awesome!!! It shifts easy, and the Jeep just walks up rocks!! LOVE IT!!
