4x4tographer 2,450 Posted August 30, 2020 (edited) Saturday, October 10, 2020: House Mountain, 4x4 Moderate This trail is on the house..... Get it? GET IT???? Join me for a jaunt up to the top of House Mountain, offering insane views of the red rocks of Sedona. We'll take an alternative route back from the peak that I'm dubbing "Return from House Mountain", which is really just a fancy name for FR 9204Y/K, but would definitely make a sweet name for a movie. Image from the UofA geological site. Image from FunTreks.com Video by member @REDROCK TONIHAWK TRIP INFO: Meeting Location: Chevron off of i17 exit 289 towards Montezuma Castle (map) 320 Castle Ln, Camp Verde, AZ 86322 Convenient location to fuel up, grab coffee, with a large dirt lot just across the street. Timing: 8:00am meet up. Depart by 8:30am or when we're all arrived. It's a short jaunt to the trailhead. Sunrise is 6:31am for reference Total trail duration is approximately 4-5 hours. Trail Information: This is an out-and-back trail, 6 miles in each direction. Capping out at 5,125 feet, we'll have amazing views of the surrounding area to include the treasures of the Red Rocks. If the group wishes for a bit more of a challenge on the way back, we'll take an optional, less-travelled "back road" down to civilization via FR 9204Y/K. Distance remains about the same Trail Difficulty: Moderate Extensive trail information/description and map track downloads can be found here. This trail is rated 2-4 (out of 10) because of the large volcanic rocks towards the top of the mountain that are quite large and require some clearance to move through without scraping your underbody. Also, the mud in this area can become very slick in the wet months. Route Overview: Red - Our trail up and back Purple - Optional "back way" back home, that I've dubbed Return from House Mountain (copyright 4x4tographer all rights and bacon reserved). Additional Considerations: Dress for the weather Don't forget the sunscreen! There isn't a lot of shade available. Bring a chair! Bring a lunch and plenty of water Bring a camera! Recovery gear/traction aid Emergency supplies / Med kit VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS: Vehicle Minimums: All vehicles are required to meet state legal requirements, (i.e.: current registration and insurance) Have functional seat-belts for each occupant Must have suitable recovery points front and rear Each vehicle must have a CB Radio or a Ham Radio in good working order High-clearance 4x4's with low-range 30"+ aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires Vehicle Recommendations: Skid plates on important areas such as transfer-case & gas-tank, sliders/rock-rails, aftermarket differential covers, high-clearance metal bumpers, low axle gearing, upgraded axle shafts, 4:1 transfer case, 33"+ tires. COMMS: CB Channel: 4 Ham Frequency: 146.46 MHz SIGN UPS: Rig Limit Once the limit is reached, anyone asking to sign-up will be placed on the standby list. Please don't hesitate to sign-up as a standby because people often do drop-out so you may get to go. Post a reply in this thread saying you'd like to go and I'll put you on the roster! Curly 695 Posted August 30, 2020 I'm looking out my window at House mtn right now. We are right at the base. I've done both trails, the 'K' trail has one little obstacle that shouldn't be problem going down. Going up, it is a short (20 foot or less) that has a gate at the immediate top of the rise. Can't be seen from below. There was just enough room for my FSJ cherokee to fit or I'd been stuck half way up the climb. The views are great from up there. 1

From the MVUM there seems to be 3 "extra options" to get down. 9204Y/K and 9952B are the only ones I've been able to verify "Jeepability" on in writing. FunTreks noted both of them as "more challenging," so hopefully we'll have a little extra excitement!
