Saturday 9/19/2020: Geode Hunting in the Brody Hills near Payson, 4x4 Moderate

How about a little rock hounding action up in Payson? Stumbled across a trail description that lays out this area as a prime location for hunting geodes. The total trail length is brief, right about 2.5 miles one-way through the pines surrounding the Payson area.

TRIP INFO:

Meeting Location:

Speedway (map2010 N Beeline Hwy, Payson, AZ 85541

Convenient location to fuel up, grab coffee, with a large parking lot next door.

Timing: 8:00am meet up

Depart by 8:30am or when we're all arrived.

We'll have a short 20min (10mi) drive to reach the dirt roads that will take us back (FR64)

Total trail duration for the day is approximately 1.5 - 2 hours.

Trail Information:

This is an out-and-back trail that is only about 1.2 miles in each direction. To gain access, we'll need to take a fire control road.

The majority of our day will be spent at about 5,600ft in the shade of the ponderosa pines.

The area is a bit of a local secret and is home to countless geodes which may be hosting crystals. Private collection of rocks is permitted but remember to be respectful of our lands and that you cannot remove items from our forests for commercial use or sale. Generally you are limited to 10lbs of collection.
