theksmith 4,041 Posted October 5, 2021 some notes from our first time towing with Freya, and first time for me towing anything bigger than a utility trailer... the travel trailer was 2,600 pounds dry, plus 200 lb water, plus our camping junk - so right at 3k pounds total. it was a 16' trailer with electronics brakes, and included a spring-bar style weight distribution/anti-sway hitch. i did not like the metal-on-metal friction style of the hitch in terms of the noises it made. i knew they were normal, but still found it to be disconcerting - it did tow nicely though. being so short of course it tracked right in line with Jeep. we never experienced any noticeable sway or out-of-control feelings. our route was about 200 miles round trip and included some substantial hill climbs (Phoenix to Campe Verde via I-17, then the 260 over to the 87/260 split, then under 4 miles on forest roads near there). we were averaging 14.7 MPG around town before getting the trailer, after the trip we were down to 9.8 MPG. Freya seemed very comfortable at around 75 MPH most of the trip, and dropping down to 65 on the long climbs out of Camp Verde. she had plenty of power to do more if i needed to pass someone, but i could hear the engine working a bit if i pushed her. the sound of the exhaust bouncing off the front of the trailer if i floored it was a new one for me. other than putting her in Sport mode, i had to disable the automatic emergency rear brake assist in order to backup with the trailer, and put her in "jack mode" when we parked to prevent the air suspension from trying to continually level itself while putting the stabilizers down. 4 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

EXACTLY... These units are SUPPOSED to NEVER have the friction surfaces lubricated. I suspect they were worn out and rather than replace it (~$70), the owner simply added lube to stop the noise. AND doing so made the sway control device about as effective as adding lube to brake linings...
