If I was going to go with a pure, part 95E certified GMRS 50w radio, the Wouxun KG-1000G GMRS for $369 would be my pick (a serious GMRS power-user radio). Although when you factor in the programming cable and an antenna, it's not actually cheaper than the Midland MXT500. I also like the detachable head. I really don't want a radio body anywhere in the front of my cab.

But I am not going to, because I have other 50w radios that can also do GMRS 😎

When I started wheeling everyone used CB, which was replaced by HAM because of clarity and range issues.  Now GMRS has apparently usurped HAM because of that pesky test, lol!   :)

It's interesting, because up here EVERYBODY still uses CB. 😅 So obviously we're keeping those. I hope my ham radios can be tuned to pick up and transmit GMRS!

I still like my Rugged Radio 45W and it was considerably cheaper

I got the 275 too.  I keep the head  unit under the driver seat.
I got 2  two hand held unites, they are really inexpensive and have good range.
I got a strong mag mount and put a 3” fat stubby antenna on the roof (mine is steel.)  It just clears my garage door and seems to make a solid ground plain.
it works great with my Baofeng  HAM if needed.  The setup stands right up to a auto carwash!  (It sits behind a crossbar.)

The whole GMRS thing baffles me.   Perhaps slightly more range that a CB, but a significant downgrade in range from Ham...   I simply fail to understand the reasoning for wanting an inferior product at the same costs of using a Ham...    JMHO & $0.02   Obviously some must disagree...   YMMV

Great point.  It seemed like Ham was the standard for a while.  I remember buying a single band VHF mobile HAM and thinking 'yes!  last radio I will ever have to buy!' lol.

Not having to take a test for GMRS may be a factor?

Since I can monitor GMRS on Ham radio, I will not invest more money in GMRS communications  ..... still have a CB that works great ,,,

The TJ has only so much room for electronics.  I want save some room for Starlink RV, so I can email everyone on the trail and monitor my Amazon orders.
