12/13/20 - Saddle Mountain near Tonopah, AZ

Recommended Posts

Today we took a little trip to the far west valley for some fun around Saddle Mountain, an area of ancient volcanic activity that was last active approximately 66 million years ago.

On this trip, we took in some:

  • Gorgeous morning views of the Saddle Mountain area
  • An easy to moderate trail ride
  • Rockhounded for Fire Agate and Chalcedony (which the area is known for)

Attendees included:

  1. @4x4tographer
  2. @Yodamom
  3. @Trail Toy
  4. @shellback91
  5. @KC4X4
  6. @KtroubleA

Overall trail time was about 4 1/2 hours with a nice break in the middle for some sight seeing and rock hounding! Largely the trail was on the "rough side of easy" with a few moderate obstacles in a few of the wash crossings. A scrape here and there and we were through! @Yodamom grabbed a few videos at our largest obstacle which I'll upload in a little bit.

About 1/4 into the trail we took a side trip into "the heart of the mountain" where we stopped to take a few photos and gossip a little. The scenery, needless to say, was stunning.

Closer to noon we took a pitstop for lunch at a remarkably flat area and noticed that the ground and sediment was littered with what we were after: Fire Agate and Chalcedony. Literal buckets upon buckets of it. Due to some of the washes serving as a sort of "gatekeeper," it seems this area doesn't see as much traffic or rockhounders on the southern side of the mountain.

Here's a few photos of the treasures our girls picked up. It'll be interesting to see what they look like after they get all cleaned up!

Here's a look at our route for the day. We ran it counter-clockwise. Our side trip into the mountain is shown as well.

Awesome captures @shellback91! Those shots at the wash really put into perspective how steep of a drop it was!

Thanks! There was a little pucker factor dropping down that ledge into the wash for sure.

@4x4tographer- Did you get  chance to go over the videos from the run? My wife thought she had some but turns out she doesn't. 😞
