4x4tographer 2,004 Posted January 19, 2021 (edited) MARCH 6 - Harquahala/Big Horn Day Run - 4x4 Easy (Near Tonopah) Get ready for a 52 mile double feature on this day run up Harquahala Mountain and through the Big Horn Mountains! Harquahala Mountain: the tallest peak in SW Arizona, chock-full of history. With this trail, you can drive all the way to the summit (a 3,360ft climb, summit at 5,600ft)! Trail length is 11mi up, 11mi back. Big Horn Mountain Trail: A run across open desert between two beautiful Wilderness Areas (Hummingbird Springs and the Big Horn Mt. Wilderness). Trail length is 25 miles, one way. Both of these trails are rated as easy and make for a great day out in your favorite stock 4x4 with low-range. MEET-UP 8:30 AM at the Harquahala staging area 33.729548,-113.297282 https://goo.gl/maps/6hZr7crjDrqPk8t86 A primitive vault toilet is available at the staging area No service stations near by, recommend fueling up in Tonopah (link) on your way ROUGH ITINERARY (All times are approximate) Harquahala Mountain Summit (22mi round trip) Air down & depart NLT 9:00 AM Drive 2 hours to the summit with a few stops along the way for photos/breaks 11:00 AM - Explore the summit, eat some lunch, take photos 12:00/12:30 PM - Depart the summit 1:30/2:00 PM - Arrive at the Staging Area for a pit stop, use the toilet At this point, if you only want to run Harquahala, you're back on the main road from here! North to Wickenburg, South to the I10. Big Horn Mountain Trail (25mi one-way trip) 2:15/2:30 PM - Depart the Harquahala staging area 5 miles on pavement to reach the Big Horn Mt. trailhead 2:45 PM - Begin the trail! We'll take a few breaks/photos along the way 4:30/5:00 PM - Trail Ends in Tonopah, just a few minutes from a pair of gas station ADDITIONAL INFORMATION This trip is subject to cancellation or postponement due to rain or inclement weather. Communications: GMRS - Channel 20 (462.675 MHz) Ham - 146.460 MHz Other Considerations: Water & Food (pack a lunch and snacks!) Dress in layers (its 20 degrees cooler at the Harquahala summit and can be windy) Folding chairs Sunscreen! Camera Emergency supplies / Med Kit No facilities, plan accordingly DRIVER & VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS This trail is suitable for beginner for 4x4 enthusiasts. Be advised there are a few steep climbs with loose rock and some mild off-camber areas. Our descent will be back long the same trail where engine compression and well-maintained brakes will come in handy. Vehicle Minimums: All vehicles are required to meet state legal requirements, (i.e.: current registration and insurance) Have functional seat-belts for each occupant Must have suitable recovery points front and rear High-clearance 4x4's with low-range 30"+ aggressive all-terrain or mud-terrain tires I wouldn't recommend a full size pick-up due to a few tight turns/switchbacks that we'll encounter. SIGN-UPS There is quite a bit of space available on this run, so I'm happy to roll with a slightly larger group than usual. Once the limit is reached, anyone asking to sign-up will be placed on the standby list. Please don't hesitate to sign-up as a standby because people often do drop-out so you may get to still go. FYI - there's a hiking trail back to Hummingbird Springs - an old ranch site - but given that you have 2 trails going here, there wouldn't be enough time to include the hike.....just an fyi for future reference....There's also some cool old mines on the north side of the Hummingbird Trail...Have fun!
