Trail/ Area: Charouleau Gap trail (Oracle AZ)

Description:

The Charouleau Gap trail is a 18 mile long remote trail that meanders through the scenic Santa Catalina mountains in the Coronado National Forest.  Put your driving skills to the test with obstacles like 'The Escalator' and 'The Car Wash'.  We will start in Oracle and end up near Oracle Junction. I am leading this as a day run, but feel free to camp along the trail if you are so inclined and are able to guide yourself out the following day (gpx track attached below).

The trail requires at least 33” tires and good articulation to navigate washed out sections. Please note that both ‘The Step’ and the ‘Kissing Rock’ obstacles are purely optional and can be easily bypassed. As always never hesitate to ask for a spot if you are unsure.

Requirements:

- Driver experience with difficult trails

- 4x4 with low range, MT or aggressive AT tires (33” minimum), and recovery points front and rear

- Lift with good flex (2” +)

- Rig must be road legal with all necessary safety equipment, current registration & insurance, etc.

- GMRS capable radio (I have a spare handheld if someone needs to use it)

- Social distancing (COVID - 19)

- At least one locker

Recommendations:

- Skid plates on important areas such as transfer-case & fuel tank

- 4:1 transfer case

- winch

- 33"+ tires.

Itinerary:

- Meeting location: Circle K, 2000 W American Ave, Oracle, AZ 85623 (map here)

- Meeting time: Saturday March 27, 2021 at 10:30 AM (depart fueled and ready no later than 10:45 AM)

Additional Info:

- GMRS Channel 21 (462.700 MHz)

- This run is limited to 5 rigs total (including trip leader)

- Here are two good write ups: Jeep the USA and AZ Offroading

- High temperatures tend to be around 70 degrees in the daytime with lows near 40 this time of year

- This trip to subject to cancellation / postponement due to inclement weather

If only I had 35" tires, 4:56 gears and a locker... 😬  Soon, hopefully soon I'll get those done on my rig, looking forward to getting into the more difficult stuff.  Y'all have a great time!
