Can stock 4runner handle this run?

If you've got low range and good aggressive tires, I think you'll be fine. If you have rock sliders, even better.

I ran Soldier Pass in a stock 2018 Cherokee about 3-4 years back. However I did have rock rails that I struck in 1 spot. I was driving too quickly.

Longer wheel-base vehicles will need to be careful over some of the minor ledges on the trail.

Here's a recent video of someone taking a fancy Range Rover Discovery down Oak Creek Homestead with with Cliffhanger section of trail.

Fast forward to 3:45 for the more moderate part of the trail. We'll go down, and back up this section called "Cliffhanger".

UPDATE!

We're got a free permit up for grabs, thanks to @REDROCK TONIHAWK, who had bought one, but has to work that day. They're willing to send it to you for free.

If you're interested, please let me know and I can coordinate it with Emanuel.

We've got a taker for the free permit - new ORP member @JL Goat!

Anyone need a permit? I am going to have to back out as an opening in a local Fly Fishing class opened up for the same weekend.

Join me for a "Saturday in Sedona"! We'll tackle the somewhat exclusive Soldier's Pass, which is limited to 12 total vehicles per day. This trail, while short, takes you to see some pretty awesome sites including the 7 Sacred Pools and the Devil's Kitchen. We'll then jet over to Oak Creek Homestead where we'll enjoy a fun trail ride that dumps us out near the 89A.

WHEN & WHAT!

  • Saturday, April 17th
  • We'll run Soldier's Pass Trail and head over to hit Oak Creek Homestead/Cliffhanger
  • After Oak Creek Homestead, feel free to enjoy Sedona or head home by way of Cottonwood to avoid the typical Sedona traffic

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow! Here are a few reminders and details:

Permit: Don't forget your Soldier Pass Permit! It is required for access to our first trail and can result in a nasty fine if you're caught without it.

Weather:

  • Freaking gorgeous
  • High of 76
  • Partly cloudy/sunny
  • Light breeze

Communications:

  • GMRS - Channel 20 (462.675 MHz) ***this is my primary radio and I'll be monitoring this freq***
  • Ham - 146.460 MHz

Meet Up:

  • 9am @ Starbucks on Coffee Pot Drive
  • Google map link is in the first post
  • There is an ARCO gas station on the corner for topping off your tank
  • Lets meet up in the large parking lot across from Starbucks

Overall route:

  • Below is a look at our overall route for the day.
  • Soldier Pass is a quick 5 minutes from Starbucks, residing in the neighborhood just behind the shopping center
  • Airing down:
    • I don't personally plan to air down before Soldier Pass.
    • Soldier Pass is a very short trail (just over 1 mile). Overall very slow going and pretty mild with a few interesting climbs. No washboard roads. I don't anticipate any traction issues.
    • After we complete Soldier Pass, it's a 10mi trek on pavement to our next trail.
    • I plan to air down at the Oak Creek Homestead trailhead to avoid needing to air down, air up, and airing down again.
  • Lunch:
    • I have no rigid schedule for our rides for the day :)
    • As Soldier Pass is really short (probably around 1-2 hours), odds are we'll be breaking for lunch on Oak Creek Homestead. We'll play it by ear!
