1/29/22 Poland Rd./Big Bug Mesa/Senator Hwy - Easy to Moderate - Near Prescott

Recommended Posts

Poland Road is a sampler menu of all that the Bradshaw Mountains offer. The salad bar profers Ponderosa Pine forests, scrub oak and manzanita chaparral, and high desert grasslands. The spread features mashed potatoes in the form of a nicely graded road but topped off by some spicy chorizo when you crawl your way through rock obstacles. For protein just watch the edges of the roadside forests for venison on the hoof or turkeys trotting into the scrub brush.

Big Bug Mesa is a relatively broad flat feature along the northeastern slopes of the Bradshaw Mountains. The area is seldom visited except by hardy ranchers and a few hunters in search of the mesa's plentiful deer and turkey. Covered in Ponderosa pines, juniper, and even the ancient alligator juniper, the mesa is green and high enough into the mountains to see heavy snows in winter and have relatively mild summer temperatures.

Please join us for another epic adventure of off roading fun!  This run will encompass 3 trails ending in the awesome town of Prescott.  We'll start on Poland Rd. just off Hwy 69, about 3/4 down the trail we'll intersect with Big Bug Mesa which will be an out & back.  Once back on Poland Rd. we'll continue on to Senator Hwy then take that into Prescott.  Once in Prescott it's open game at that point.

This run is subject to cancellation/postponement due to weather, fires and/or closures, etc.

Make sure you guys pop by the train tunnel from Murphy's Impossible Railroad on the way up Poland Road - just before you hit Breezy Pines (34.44665, -112.34536)

Also note that you'll exceed 7,600 ft elevation as you come down the back side of Poland Road on your way to the Senator Highway near Mount Union. Depending on conditions, Mount Union has a picnic spot at the summit just under 8,000 ft (34.41486, -112.40442) but you'll be 15 degree cooler than Prescott up there. 🥶

Thanks for the info, looks awesome!  It'll be interesting to see as it gets closer to this run if there will be snow and/or snowing, of course those conditions could cause a cancellation/postponement of this run. 😟

Do trails close when snow hits? We've run snow trails in WY, never in AZ.

Please put us on the list....looks fun.

Not sure about closures due to snow, some trails may become impassable as a result of snow/melting snow though.
