Mini Review: Worklight - Joby GorillaTorch

Got a new worklight, PepBoys had them locally - The GorillaTorch Original from Joby. Joby makes the GorillaPod which is a great tripod and much more for cameras, and they apparently extended their market to work lights.

 

It's a 65 Lumen CREE LED product, so pretty decent specs. They also have a new version with 100 Lumen and red leds and flasher mode too, but I like the simpler original one and 65 lumen is fine for sitting right next to what you're working on.

 

It has pretty strong magnetic feet that let you stick it to anything metal. And three "arms" with rubber grips all round them that will conform to wrap around nearly anything that isn't metal. The head is pose-able in infinite directions.

 

 

It takes 3 AA batteries (included). I prefer the AA package to CR123 because they are cheaper and more common, yet you can still get more expensive Lithium versions of them if you desire (which do last longer). The switch on the side rotates to turn it on as well as dim it to several brightness levels.

 

I like that it packs up to a reasonably small size for storage in the tool case:

 

 

My only complaint is that since it is a task light, it should be optimized for up close work with a nice diffused light, not a heavy spot light beam. This means it really should probably have an orange-peel reflector, but it does not. I remedied this by taking apart the front bezel, removing the plastic lens and spraying the inside of the lens with some Krylon "Frosted Glass" spray paint (scotch-tape will work as well). This resulted in a much more diffused and useful area light:

Overall this makes a great toolbox work light that will stick or wrap to nearly anything, so that you can get light right where you're working. This, along with a small headlamp, should make night time repairs a snap. It could also make a useful light around camp.
