Recommended Posts

TRIP REPORT AND PHOTO THREAD CAN BE FOUND HERE:

Join me on this 2-night quest to explore the Mogollon Rim, take in the sights, and maybe spy some fall color! The majority of these trails are easy-going and extremely scenic, with plentiful opportunities to find the perfect camp site - hopefully with a killer view!

THE MEET-UP:

When:

Friday, October 27th @ 10:00am

Where: PIEbar AZ

5096 AZ-87, Strawberry, AZ 85544 (map)

We will meet up for a late breakfast at PIEbar AZ!  PIEbar AZ is a local favorite in Strawberry, specializing in hand made empanadas. EMPANADAS = hand pies! The comfort food you hold in your hand!

**Please arrive with a full tank of gas**

The nearest gas station is a Chevron located just down the road in Pine (map)

THE TRAIL:

Trail Rating:  Moderate

The vast majority of our path will be along well-groomed forest roads. However, we will be traversing the "ORP-Famous" Just a Forest Road. Also known as Clover Springs (booorrrriiinnnng), Just a Forest Road is an interesting trail that holds a low-moderate rating for some bumpy sections and a few mild technical challenges.

The rest of our time on the trails will be on easy-going dirt roads, with the chance of some bumpy sections and washboards. Total mileage is ~120 miles, broken into roughly equal parts of about 40 miles per day. I expect that we'll set up at camp rather early each day, leaving plenty of time for relaxing and hanging out by the campfire. We will end our trip at the 260, allowing for a convenient path home.

Points of interest include:

  • Milk Ranch Point
  • Bear Canyon & Clear Creek Wilderness
  • Battleground Ridge
  • General Cabin
  • Myrtle Point
  • Blue Ridge Reservoir
  • The Mogollon Rim (duh!)

We'll do our best to find some premium campsites with views over the Mogollon Rim near Milk Ranch Point on Night 1 and overlooking the waters of the Blue Ridge Reservoir on Night 2.

Please put me down.

I’ve been wanting to do this one for a while.

I’m gonna back out of Swansea. There is a long standby list to fill my spot.

Please sign me up for this trip.  Also, never been up there before, do you think the trails on the trip are suitable for a tribe overland trailer? (I plan to go with or without trailer)

You should be fine on these roads with the trailer.  I have seen many rigs with off-road trailers on these trails as well as full sized trucks/trailers and RVs.

Took a look at the Tribe trailers - I think you guys will be just fine. Some careful tire placement on "Just a Forest Road", which is the first trail, and you'll be fine. The rest of the trails we'll be on are all rated as very easy.

Just a heads up, there's currently 2 fires in the area you're looking at.  One is 75% contained and the other is 50% contained, as of today.  So you may encounter some new burn areas along FR 300.

Thanks for the heads up. Right now, neither fire will impact this trip. There are no closure orders for the Labor Fire (Sitegraves). The Valentine Fire (Tonto) has a road closure associated with it south of the Rim which will also not impact us.

I came up to the rim this weekend on Young highway just east of the Valentine fire and then just north of it on the 260 coming back down this afternoon.

It’s smoky up there but very chill.  Seems like they are letting it slow burn “fire dependent ecosystems” that haven’t had any action in years.
